  1. Plagiarism What is Plagiarism?

  2. Plagiarism is the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work." 1. 剽窃,抄袭 2. 剽窃物,抄袭物, 剽窃作品

  3. Plagiarism by students, professors, or researchers is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud and offenders are subject to academic censure, up to, and including, expulsion.

  4. Why do some students do it?

  5. Many students feel pressured to complete papers well and quickly, and with the accessibility of new technology (the Internet) students can plagiarize by copying and pasting information from other sources.

  6. But your teachers will know!

  7. Plagiarism is often easily detected by teachers, for several reasons: • First, students' choice of sources are frequently unoriginal; instructors may receive the same passage copied from a popular source from several students. Second, it is often easy to tell whether a student used their own "voice." Third, students may choose sources which are inappropriate, off-topic, or contain incorrect information.

  8. Consequences for Plagiarism are usually severe …

In the academic world, plagiarism by students is a very serious offence that can result in punishments such as a failing grade on the particular assignment or for the course. • For cases of repeated plagiarism a student may be suspended or expelled. • In many universities, academic degrees or awards may be revoked as a penalty for plagiarism.

  10. So, is this one of the reasons we do we do the homework in class? • Yes! • But there are other reasons, too …

  11. We do ‘class work’ instead of homework for the following reasons: • To remove the temptation of Plagiarism. • To allow students to experience writing under pressure, within a specific time-limit, therefore enhancing examination skills. • In Class, as the student writes, the teacher is available to offer advice in person, if required. • No Homework for students to worry about! Students have many homework pressures; some ‘in class’ work can help to alleviate that burden. • Avoid ‘last-minute’ rushing with homework (usually because a student has forgotten to do it until the very last minute!

  12. Please do not: • Use any mobile or personal computer in the class, particularly during class work time! • Copy ideas from your classmates. Your own thoughts and opinions are required.

  13. Most Importantly … • Never plagiarise! • Consequences of plagiarism include failing in an assignment, or even failing the entire course.
