  1. The Organization of Life Chapter 4

  2. Ecosystem An ecosystem is all of the organisms living in an area together with their physical environment

  3. Desert Ecosystem Contains Air Living Things Sand

  4. Abiotic Factors Non-living factors contributing to an ecosystem Example/ Water

  5. Natural Selection Instituted by Charles Darwin Natural Selection is the unequal survival and reproduction that results from the presence or absence of particular traits Or A process that causes the characteristics of a population to change without human control

  6. Population A population is all the members of the same species that live in the same place at the same time

  7. Habitat The place where an organism lives The place that contains everything an organism needs

  8. Evolution • A change in the genetic characteristics of a population from one generation to the next.

  9. Adaptation An adaptation is an inherited trait that increases an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction in a certain environment Or Trait that increases an organism’s chance of survival

  10. Artificial Selection The selective breeding of organisms by humans for specific characteristics Or A process that causes the characteristics of a population to change in a way controlled by humans

  11. Resistance The ability of one or more organisms to tolerate a particular chemical designed to kill it Or A trait that increases an organism’s chance of survival

  12. Bacteria Microscopic, single-celled organisms that usually have cell walls and reproduce by dividing in half No nucleus Two types of bacteria are: Archaebacteria Eubacteria

  13. Photosynthesis Using energy from the sun to make food Performed by: Plants Protists

  14. Decomposers Two organisms that break down dead organisms are: Eubacteria Fungi (Also lobsters and other detritovores)

  15. Lower Plants • Small plants such as mosses, ferns, ground mosses, and tree ferns • (Hint: Ferns and Mosses)

  16. Angiosperms Flowering plants that produce seeds in fruit Require animals for: Pollinating their flowers Distributing their seeds (Both A and B)

  17. Insects Invertebrates that are generally small, allowing them to live on little food and hide from enemies

  18. Vertebrates Animals with a PROTECTED Dorsal Ventral Nerve Chord They have a back bone An example would be a frog Examples that aren’t vertebrates are: Clams Worms Insects
