  2. With so many places to see and things to do in Ottawa, it can be difficult to know where to start. Whatever your priorities, there are five things you must not miss.

  3. 1. Parliament Buildings As the capital city of Canada, Ottawa is home to the parliament buildings. There are three in total, all of which are located on Parliament Hill. The most impressive is the Centre Block, which features Peace Tower — a bell tower with 53 bells that chime the hour. Take an elevator up to the top of the tower for panoramic views of the city below. You can explore the rest of the building on your own or in a guided tour.

  4. 2. ByWard Market ByWardmarket is the place to go if you want to experience the flavours, crafts, and fashions of Canada. You’ll find a farmer’s market with more than 150 stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, maple syrup, and other produce. In the surrounding neighbourhood, there are bistros, souvenir shops, and high-end stores — something for all tastes.

  5. 3. Rideau Canal Right next to ByWard Market is Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site — the only one in Ontario. If you are lucky enough to be visiting during the winter when the water is frozen, you’ll be able to skate down the canal. In the summer, you can rent a kayak, canoe, boat, or paddle board. During the rest of the year, visitors can enjoy a picturesque walk or ride a bike along the banks.

  6. 4. Walking Tours See the highlights of the city with a walking tour. You can find a tour that matches your interests, whether you’re a history buff, ghost hunter, or foodie. There are also cycling tours and pub walks.

  7. 5. Museums Ottawa is a top destination for museums — make sure to visit at least one. You have a vast number of choices, including the Canadian War Museum, Canada Science and Technology Museum, National Gallery of Canada, and Bytown Museum (for Ottawa’s history).
