Why is it so HOT here?? Covering standard E 12 A.4
Covering standard E 12 A.4 • E 12 A.4 Student know convection and radiation play important roles in moving heat energy in the earths system. E/S
CCSD Earth Science Objectives • Syllabus Objectives 4.7, 4.8, 13.5, 13.6 • 4.8.A SUGGESTION: Demonstrate energy transfer by the following: • a. Radiation • b. Conduction • c. Convection • 4.8.B SUGGESTION: Refer to activity Equilibrium from the Earth Science Activities book.
Student Misconception 1 • Heat acts as a fluid. (Erickson & Tiberghein, 1985; Stepans, 1994).
Student Misconception 2 • Heat is a substance which can be added to or removed from an object (Stepans, 1994; Watts, 1983). Heat makes things rise (Stepans, 1994). Cold is opposite to heat (Stepans, 1994).
Why would they think that? • Possible source of misconception:nonscientific use of the terms heat and temperature add confusion to this topic. Kinetic molecular theory is too abstract and has little effect at transforming students' ideas.
Inquiry Lesson Coming Right Up! • Starter Question: • Is heat a substance?
What is Heat? • Is heat a substance? • Does it have mass? • Does it have volume? • Does heat have a shape?
Your Assignment, Should You Choose to Accept It… Challenge 1: Is Heat a Substance?
1.Weigh Ice. 2.Melt ice. 3.Weigh Again. 4.Compare Data.
What does your data mean? • Lead a discussion. • Have kids journal for 5 min. • Start a flip book vocabulary assignment. • Transfer • Endothermic • Exothermic
Demo • Challenge 2 – What makes water mix?
1. 2 Earlenmeyer flasks, both 21.C, one dyed blue, one yellow. 2. Card on top, 3. Flip the carded beaker onto other beaker, pull the card. 4.Observe. Repeat with 2 different temperatures. (1 cold, 1 hot)
What do your observations mean? • Lead a discussion. • Have kids journal for 5 min. • Finish vocabulary flip book. • Energy • Convection • Conduction
In Conclusion • Is heat a fluid? • Can it flow through a container? • So, is heat a substance? • Can you weigh it? • What do YOU think?????????? • What can you prove…?
