  5. The Endocrine System • Adrenals • Thyroid • Pituitary • Hypothalamus • Pancreas • Ovaries (female) • Prostate (male)

  6. Adrenals Two small glands that sit on top of the kidneys and secrete hormones such as: Adrenal Gland • Cortisol • DHEA • Estrogen • Progesterone • Testosterone • Epinephrine Kidney

  7. Adrenals Adrenals play a role in: • Energy • Stress Response (flight or fight) • Maintaining fluid and mineral balance • Supporting the immune system • Maintaining normal blood sugar • Inflammation control • Hormone production The Women’s Hormone Guide by Kimberly Balas & Janet DeVoogd

  8. Lack of or Excessive Exercise c

  9. Adrenal Stress

  10. Adrenal Exhaustion Signs: • Difficulty getting up in the morning • Fatigue not relieved by sleep • Salt cravings • Increased effort to do everyday tasks • Decreased libido • Decreased ability to handle stress • Mild mood changes

  11. Adrenal Exhaustion (continued) Signs: • Increased PMS • Fuzzy thinking • Poor memory • Increased time to recover from illness, injury or trauma • Feeling light-headed when standing up quickly Adrenal Fatigue by James L. Wilson, pg. 27-44

  12. Support for the Adrenals • Adrenal Support • Nervous Fatigue TCM • DHEA-F • Mineral-Chi Tonic • Licorice Root Extract • Distress Remedy • Stress-J • B-Complex

  13. Pituitary • Growth Hormone Production • Production of hormones that act on other endocrine glands

  14. Pituitary • Production of hormones that act on the muscles and kidneys • Regulates overall endocrine system • Stores hormones produced by the hypothalamus

  15. Hypothalamus • Maintains balance in the endocrine system • Communicates with the pituitary gland • “Sleep-wake” cycle regulation • Food & water intake regulation

  16. Support for the Hypothalamus & Pituitary • Alfalfa • Master Gland • Combination Potassium

  17. Pancreas • Controls blood sugar balance • Produces insulin • To lower glucose levels • Produces glucagon • To increase glucose levels

  18. Pancreas • Secretes lipase, amylase, trypsin & chymotrypsin for carbohydrate and fat digestion. • Insulin Resistance is a result of the cells no longer allowing insulin to bring sugar into the cells to keep the blood sugar balanced.

  19. Insulin Resistance Cell receptors are not working to let insulin or glucose enter the cell. Signs: • Elevated triglycerides • Low levels of HDL • High blood pressure • High blood sugar • Abdominal obesity • Waist circumference of >35” for women and >40” for men receptor glucose insulin cell www.webmd.com

  24. Measuring the Basal Body Temperature • The night before, shake down the thermometer (an oral glass thermometer only), and set it on the night stand next to the bed. • Immediately upon waking, without raising your head from the pillow, place the thermometer under the arm. • Leave thermometer under arm for 10 minutes. • Move as little as possible in this process; you must remain flat on your back during this entire time otherwise the thyroid gland will be activated and you will get a false reading.

  25. Measuring the Basal Body Temperature (continued) • After 10 minutes, remove thermometer and record temperature. 6. The test is invalidated if you expend any energy just before recording the temperature, i.e. getting up for any reason, shaking down thermometer, etc. 7. Do this every morning for five days. Add all 5 temperatures and divide by 5. • An average temperature between 97.8 and 98.2 is considered normal. Brilliant Body Glandular System by Julie DeVisser
