The Ubuntu Village • Innisfree Park • Along Grayston Drive and M1 • Facilities include • The International Best Practice Exhibition including multi level exhibition space (up to 5000 square meters) and meeting rooms (500 pax total) • The African Globe Theatre - A multipurpose theatre and presentation venue (600 pax) • AfricaArt – a showcase gallery for award winning African Fine Art. • An International Food and Beverage Court with the emphasis on showcasing the African culinary experience and South African wines.. • A Commercial Business Center with print, secretarial, communications and internet services • A Central Information Bureau with 24-hour access to trained personnel and the Summit Call Center. • A satellite Police Station • A basic care Medical Center and general practitioner’s consulting rooms and dispensary. • WSSD Open University – A resource center featuring scheduled lectures on the theme of sustainable development run along summer school lines. • Summit Radio Studios – WSSD’s 24 hour summit themed radio station • WSSD Internal TV Broadcasts – Both on Big Screen and television constant coverage will be relayed of major summit events. • The Global Village Media Mixer - An informal media lounge for the world’s media

Ubuntu Village Cont’d • The Earth Arena - an open air concert arena including: • A landscape seating area for up to 5000 pax • A covered stage with full lighting, sound and basic backline facilities • A daily program of cultural and entertainment activities featuring at least one headlining South African/African act. • Speaker’s Corner – with regular opportunities for all to have a platform for their views. • Expression HQ • office facilities with basic communications infrastructure available on a daily basis for organizers of demonstrations in an around Sandton. • This will enable liaison with security services. • This will emphasize South Africa’s commitment to the orderly exercise of the rights to freedom of speech, expression and association. • BioHouse • A ”Big Brother” type installation featuring the principles of sustainable development in action. • SABC and Summit TV to include live broadcasts of activities in and around the house. • The Market • a commercial arts and craft market. • The emphasis will be on products that empower people and protect the environment.

Accommodation • Hotel grids 80% complete for all headquarter hotels • More rooms becoming available • DMC appointed December 5 • Global DMC Consortium • DMC website online with 4500 beds provisionally booked, pending accreditation • Theta to assist with service standards training • Tourism Grading Council to assist with Homestays • Summit as a catalyst for Fedhasa’s Umvelo Awards ‘02 for industry to convert to best practice

Accreditation System • SA will offer two-tiered, integrated accreditation system which caters for everyone coming to the official UN WSSD as well as the events co-ordinated by the major groupings as recognised by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development and accredited parallel and fringe events

The Challenge • Pre accreditation is the key to access transport, accommodation & conference venues • Identity • Dual application forms for data capture • Integration with vetting • To relieve the pressure on accreditation centres • Memorandum of understanding to be entered into between SA & : • The United Nations • Civil Society • Business • ICLEI • All stakeholders with accredited fringe events

  31. Stakeholder Management • Interaction has taken place with a large number of stakeholders ranging from political parties to taxi associations • Identification and vetting of side events underway
