  7. “Mentoring is a reciprocal and collaborative learning relationship between two, sometimes more, individuals with mutual goals and shared accountability for the outcomes and success of the relationship.” -Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses

  8. Purpose of a Mentorship Program -To assist new school nurses (0-2 years in the field) developing their roles, skills, and satisfaction with their careers. -A free service offered as a benefit of membership in the organization

  9. Benefits of having a Mentor: • Provide Guidance • Help Solve Problems • Offer Emotional Support • Help Build Your Confidence • Guide your Career

  10. Character Traits of a Great Mentor: Positivity - Remaining upbeat and undiscouraged, especially in regard to the job of nursing. Tolerance - Willing to accept all kinds of people. Patience - Capable of remaining calm and focussed in the face of difficult challenges. Insight - Able to assess situations and provide useful solutions and/or advice. Clarity - Able to clearly communicate information and advice. Commitment - Possessing an earnest devotion to the job of nursing and the role of nurse mentor.

Guidelines for Mentors Apply to be a Mentor Minimum of one year commitment Attend OSNA sponsored Mentorship trainings when offered Connect with the Mentee by phone/email/or in person as frequently as determined by the partnership, with a minimum contact of once per month. Listen to the Mentee’s concerns and frustrations Offer emotional support and encouragement

  12. Guidelines for Mentors continued: Answer general questions about school nursing. Assist the Mentee in locating information and resources regarding school nursing issues. Assist the Mentee in finding resources and support within their school/district. Assist in identifying and utilizing available OSNA/NASAN supports. Assist in the Mentee’s understanding of school nursing issues from a state-wide perspective.

  13. Guidelines for Mentors continued: Contact the Mentor Coordinator with any issues or problems that come up in the Mentoring relationship. Complete the membership evaluation on an annual basis.
