  1. S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. ELECTRICITY

  2. Taking a look back!!! • Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. • Electrons are negatively charged particles, • Protons are positively charged particles. • Electrical energy is produced by the movement and distribution of these charged particles.

  3. The atom (discussion) • The atom has energy levels which contains a particular # of electrons. When the electrons jump from shell to shell, this changes the distribution of electrons which can be known as electricity.

  4. Electric current • Flow of the electric charges • This is measured in amps (A) • Flows from higher potential to lower potential • The difference in these places is called the potential difference (volts (V), which results in electrical charges being in 2 locations. • A battery converts chemical to electrical so the potential difference is created by the positive and negative terminals.

  5. Circuits (S8P5 B) • Path through which energy can flow • Charges will flow IF there is a potential difference. • 3 parts: • Energy source: pushes the charge through (electrons are repelled from the negative end and move to the positive end) • Loads: the thing that operates (light bulbs, bells, radios, motors) • Conductor: allows electrical energy to flow (most common: metals)**wire

  6. Some have… • Resistors: restricts the flow of the electricity by producing a voltage drop when currents pass through • Switch: controls the flow of current through a circuit. • Separating 2 conductors (open) • Bringing together 2 conductors (closed)

  7. Marshmallows • Directions: • Place marshmallow in your left hand. • You will eat your marshmallow after someone to your left has squeezed your hand. The squeeze represents electrical impulses! Without the impulses, the circuit won’t flow. If you open the circuit, the electricity won’t flow. • This represents a series circuit where there is only one path to travel.

  8. Electricity flows from the battery through each bulb, through the switch and back to the battery. One path Everything has to work in order for electricity to flow! The more loads, the lower the current Series Circuit (Domino effect)

  9. Parallel Circuit • Offers more than one path for the flow of electricity and the current is different! • Each load has its own pathway to the energy source. If one side messes up, the other can still work.

  10. + Simple More of a current capability Less room is needed - If one light burns out, the current stops Broken or missing load causes circuit to go out Not useful for household electricity Advantages and disadvantages of series circuits (foldable!!)

  11. + Increase their power If one burns out, the others can still work (Christmas lights) Turn on one light without turning them all on - Bulky and takes up more room More complicated + and – of parallel circuits (foldable)

  12. Write your lyrics!! Write a song teaching 5th graders the difference in series and parallel. We will vote and learn that song. • Series: • One path • Energy goes from 1 load to the other • More loads, less energy • Parallel: • More than 1 path • Different current • Works even when 1 goes out
