  3. The Center for Student Ethics and Standards has several goals as the basis for the judicial process:

These goals are . . . • To educate the student by explaining the reasons for the community standard. • To bring the student’s behavior into compliance with the community standard. • To have the student maturely accept accountability for their behavior. • To help students consider in advance the consequences of their behavior. • To determine with the student the reason for the misconduct.

  5. Philosophy of Discipline • Staff needs to get in the way • Mentoring • Critical thinking • Provides an opportunity for extracurricular activities

Police Services Incident Reports Vermont Traffic Citation University Violation Notices Online Incident Report Residential Incident Report The Center for Student Ethics and Standards Receives Report AD Reviews report to determine violations and charges Notification Letter to students within 3-5 days with pre-conference date and time Pre-conference Meeting (May be waived for aggravated violations) Student accepts responsibility and is assigned sanctions at pre-conference meeting Student opts to schedule a hearing with a Judicial Council Decision Letter to student within 3 working days after hearing Written appeal to DOS within 5 working days If student is under 21 and responsible for AOD violation, generic notification letter sent to parent and academic unit Appeal decision letter to student within 5 working days of Board's decision Sanction Review if sanctions not complete The Life of an Incident Report

The Deadly Sins” • Rape, acquaintance (date) rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse. • Endangering mental or physical health (hazing). • Physical assaults resulting in injury requiring medical attention. • Discriminatory or bias-related acts of assault or abuse. • False fire alarms or acts that undermine safety/security equipment or systems.

  8. “The Deadly Sins” Continued… • Brandishing, threatening or injuring with a weapon (for example, knives, firearms, pellet or bb gun8s, air pistols/rifles, chukka sticks, fireworks or explosives). • Attempts to set or intentionally setting fires that may result in damage or injury. • Sale use or possession of illegal drugs as defined by law or use of prescription drugs in a way that is not protected. • Violations of the campus alcohol policy that result in injury, damage to property, detox or undermine the safety and security of the campus.

  9. Based upon a finding of “responsible,” appropriate sanctions are issued. How a Decision is Made: Preponderance of Evidence

  10. Sanctioning allows us . . . • To offer a developmental experience for the student. • To maintain a sense of consistency on the campus. • To create and support a positive community.
