  3. Effects of (Opening) Stage directions • The Opening Stage Direction needs to get to the point. • A few playwrights feel compelled to write paragraphs here, but most tell us only very briefly where we are, who's there, and when it's happening. • (A courtyard. Joan and Larkin surrounded by a pool of light, Joan in a tan trench coat and Larkin in sweater and wool scarf. They are alone as it's possible to be in this business.)

  4. Effects of (Character) Stage directions • Here's what they're good for . . . • Physical action to be done as the line is being spoken: • Action implying the equivalent of a (Pause): • Tone of voice or emotional quality of the line: • Clarifying who the line is said to when more than two characters are on stage: • They describe more than one physical action. • They state what a different character is doing. • (Filling the glass) • (Shaking her head) • (Distraught) • (To Joan) • (Struggling) • (Moving away) • (In the distance, John shakes his head.)

  5. Analysing Act 2, Scene 7 for Physical Staging Stage Direction Effect To reveal a new scene- but also to reveal a new Rita. In direct contrast to how she previously entered. Why? Lighting a cigarette marks a partial return to Rita’s old ways. Why is she revealing him? What has changed in their relationship? Why? What has changed? Normal behaviour? • The lights come up • Rita enters and shuts the door. • She lights a cigarette. • She opens the door to reveal Frank. • He is taken aback at seeing her. • Rita watches him. What about noise here?

  6. Plenary How are you going to use the mark scheme to help you achieve a grade C? What have you learned about Physical Staging?
