Background • Sharon Meaney – Development Co-ordinator • 1st September 2008 • Develop a volunteer centre for County Clare to facilitate the effective placement of volunteers within the community & voluntary sector. Provide services and supports to the community & voluntary sector to enable them to recruit & retain their volunteers.
Introduction to VCI • VCI (Volunteer Centres Ireland) ‘the national organisation with responsibility for developing volunteering in Ireland, locally and nationally’ • VCI received funding in 2005 – remit is to facilitate national network of volunteer centres, raise awareness nationally of importance of volunteering and develop best practice • 20 centres nationally – Clare Volunteer Centre is their newest member

Employers can …… • Receive advice and support on how to engage with local community & voluntary groups through employer supported volunteering programmes
Our Approach • The Clare Volunteer centre will proactively encourage organisations to develop their volunteering opportunities and ensure that volunteers are supported and recognised within these organisations. • Action : Contact to be made with all 550 groups registered on the community & voluntary database
Our Approach • The Clare Volunteer Centre will support organisations whose activities involve volunteers by supplying education, training and information. • Action : Training Courses to be run for non-profit/community & voluntary organisations early 2009.
Our Approach • The Clare Volunteer Centre will adopt a proactive and inclusive approach to encouraging all potential volunteers to register on the database and ensure that they are made aware of suitable opportunities • Action : Local Media Coverage | Open Door Policy
Our Approach • The Clare Volunteer Centre will positively promote the benefits of volunteering, through local media, volunteer focused events and participation in national campaigns. • Local promotional campaign | Volunteer Fair | Active Citizenship Week | Give it a Swirl 2009
Targeted Approach • Focus on specific targeting of potential volunteers, children, youth, disabled people, senior citizens, Travellers, ethnic minorities • Promotion of Supported Volunteering | Launch of Training programme aimed at encouraging voluntary organisations to encourage diversity in national recruitment • Action : Partner with local service providers and support agencies
Target Population • Population of Clare - 110,950 – [Census 2006] • 16,217 persons (aged 15 years and over) involved in one or more voluntary activity. • Schools, Support Agencies, Active Retirement Groups . . . . . . . . .
Clare Volunteer Centre – 5 months on • Contact has been made with all 550 organisations on the community and voluntary database • Over 100 Organisations are registered with the Clare Volunteer Centre – • Opportunities volunteering with Youth/Children, Fundraising, Mentoring, Befriending, Retail, Graveyard Maintenance, Sports…. • 40 volunteers registered • 2 organisations in the process of availing of the Garda Vetting Service
Targets for 2009 • 50 active organisations on the database • 40 volunteering opportunities • 2 training courses • 60 volunteers registered and placed • 30 volunteer visits to the Volunteer Centre • 1 employer supported project
Facts & Figures • 1 in 3 of voluntary organisations have problems recruiting volunteers • In the last year Irish volunteers contributed 465,624 hours of volunteer work • Estimates on the in-kind revenue from volunteering in Ireland range from €200 - €600 million • For every €1 on public funding spent to support volunteering, volunteers give back €30 to the economy
