Reliability = Consistency • The reliability program is a valuable means of achieving better operational performance in related issues and increase flight safety.
Two Approaches • When you come to the concept of reliability there are two main approaches: • One looks essentially at the whole airline operation or the M&E operation within the whole. • The other looks at the maintenance program in particular and in segmented pieces.
M&E operation within the whole • Overall airline reliability • This approach to track reliability is mainly used to track delays. • The delays are logged as they are caused: • Maintenance, ATC, or flight ops, etc. • Measured essentially by dispatch reliability. • (how often the airline achieves an on time departure)
Maintenance Program in Particular • This approach is similar is very similar to M&E operations. • The only difference is they concern their selves only with delays due to maintenance.
Types of Reliability • Four Main types • Statistical reliability • Historical reliability • Event-oriented reliability • Dispatch reliability • You can use reliability in various respects • Overall reliability of the airline • Reliability of component or system • Reliability of a person or process
Statistical Reliability • Based upon a collection of analysis of failure, removal, and repair rates of systems or components. • Various maintenance actions are often referred to as “events”. • Event rates are calculated on the basis of events per 1000 flight hours or events per 100 flight cycles. • Many airlines use statistical reliability but give it more credit than it deserves • This is bad for small airlines as results are unaccurate
Historical Reliability • Simply a comparison of current of event rates with those of past experience. • The data collected over time releases to display the overall reliability of a specific airline, for a specific time frame. • History will tell you what part was in the shop for and for how long as statistical reliability doesn’t tell you that.
Event-Oriented Reliability • Concerned with one time events • Bird strikes • Hard landings • Overweight landings • In-flight engine shutdowns • Lightning strikes • Ground and flight interruptions
Dispatch Reliability • A measure of overall reliability and effectiveness of airline operations in respect to on time departure • Receives considerable attention from authorities as well as airlines and passengers • They find a percentage of successful flights out of 100 to make it easy and understandable • 60 flights were on time out of a 100 So 60% of their flights were successful and on time.
Data Collection • The data collection process is determined by the discretion of the airlines • Not all airlines collect all data • Used to help the four types of reliability determine the overall success of the airlines • Ten Types • Flight times and cycles of each aircraft • Cancellations and delays over 15 minutes • Unscheduled component removals • Unscheduled engine removals • In-flight engine shutdowns • Pilot reports or logbook write-ups • Cabin log book write ups • Component failures(shop Main.) • Maintenance check package findings • Critical failures
