WG 802.15 Guidelines for starting New Work • Introduction- intended usage and scope of the GL • Basic Process- description from ideas to starting a new TG project • Role of 15WNG • Charter • Scope • Way of working • Criteria for starting a Study Group (SG) Erik Schylander, Philips
1. Introduction • This document is intended to be used as guidelines for how to start New Work in 802.15. • It describes the process from ideas presented in the 15WNG (wireless next generation), starting a SG (study group) to prepare the PAR & 5C needed by the WG to launch a new TG standardization project. • The role of the 15WNG is instrumental to guide this process. Erik Schylander, Philips
2. Process From ideas to a new TG project • New ideas are presented in the 15WNG • Further discussions on the intentions and SG criteria by email reflector, phone conference and WNG meetings. • Check that the criteria for starting a SG are fulfilled. If not the work item can be discarded or kept for further investigations / discussions. • Create a motion to the 802.15 WG to start a SG to be approved by a straw poll. All attendees have voting rights. • The WG to approve the SG motion. • The SG charter is to produce the PAR and 5C documents required by IEEE-SA to approve a new TG. Erik Schylander, Philips
3. Role of Standing Committee: 15WNG • Charter • To facilitate and stimulate presentations and discussions on new Wireless related Technologies within the defined scope, that may be subject for new 802.15TG standardization projects (or does not fit within the current projects). • Scope • WPAN technologies in general, not limited to only MAC/PHY layer(Not WLAN, WRAN or Infrastructure, and no legacy constrains) • Way of working • Presentations: • To notify WNG Chair be email and/or 15WNG of intention to contribute, and indicate the time needed for presentation and Q&A • Upload the contribution before presentation • The presentation can be about a new technology or a Use Case etc. • Discussions on Email reflector, phone conferences and at the 15WNG sessions. • To use straw poll for eventual decisions on further actions • 15WNG may decide by straw poll to recommend the 802.15 WG to start a SG to produce PAR & 5C for a New Work item Erik Schylander, Philips
Examples of New Work items • Extreme low power radios and Energy efficient data transfers • Use of MIMO for WPAN • SW defined radios • Multi-band chirp spread spectrum • NFC and RFID • Multi-packet / Contention-Free MAC / PHY • Methods to improve wireless reliability for PAN networks • Body area network (BAN) • New WL network architectures • Mobile, Nomadic Mesh-networks • Ad hoc networks with new applications to handheld, consumer electronics appliances. • Network Management technologies • Secure Wireless messaging service • Easy configuration of PAN (ad-hoc) networks • Heterogeneous WPAN interoperability and interworking • Interworking with other (infrastructure) Networks • Location based applications • Wireless coexistence and Dynamic mitigation techniques • Efficient Roaming Erik Schylander, Philips
4. Criteria for starting a Study Group • Show that there is enough interest for a new SG • Recommendation:some10 persons from at least 4 companies • Candidates for Chair and secretary • Global definition of the intended project • Name • Features and Functions (what the should be supported) • Scope (what market, usage and technology) • Check that there are no blocking issues from the SG charter • Show Reasons for a Broad Market Potential (MRD) • Identify Unique / Discriminating features (FRD) • Technical feasibility within the timeframe of the project • Indicate other requirements like Security, Regulatory, co-existence, No blocking patents, etc. that may apply • Not same standards work is done by an other organization Erik Schylander, Philips
5. Study Group charter • Select officers • Chair • Secretary • Write the PAR (Project Description) • Write the 5C (criteria) • Ask for the WG approval (of the documents) to be sent to ExCom for further approval processing to start a new TG. Erik Schylander, Philips
