  1. Homecrest Presbyterian ChurchWorship of the Lord’s DayAugust 28th, 2016 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

  2. God calls us to service, rather than honor. God calls us to love the unknown, rather than the familiar. We come to this time of worship, trusting in the grace of Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Come, let us worship God. Gathering Around the WORDCall To Worship (Based on Hebrews 13:1-2, 8)

  3. Gathering Hymn# 645 “Sing Praise to God who Reigns Above” Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation. With healing balm my soul is filled, and every faithless murmur stilled: to God all praise and glory!

  4. Gathering Hymn# 645 “Sing Praise to God who Reigns Above” What God’s almighty power has made God's gracious mercy keepeth; by morning glow or evening shade God's watchful eye ne'er sleepeth.Within the kingdom of God's might, lo! all is just and all is right: to God all praise and glory!

  5. Gathering Hymn# 645 “Sing Praise to God who Reigns Above” The Lord is never far away, but, through all grief distressing, an ever-present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing,as with a mother's tender hand God gently leads the chosen band: to God all praise and glory!

  6. Gathering Hymn# 645 “Sing Praise to God who Reigns Above” Thus all my toilsome way along I sing aloud thy praises, that all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises.Be joyful in the Lord, my heart; both soul and body, take your part: to God all praise and glory!

  7. Gathering Around the WORDCall to ConfessionGod invites us to mutual love. But to find that mutuality, we must release our need for honor, our desire for privilege. In humility let us seek forgiveness with God and with our neighbors, trusting in the promises of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  8. Gathering Around the WORDPrayer of Confession(in unison)Merciful God, forgive us for we exalt ourselves and mock the humble. We choose to believe we are self-sufficient rather than trusting in your strength. Open us to your spirit, that we might serve all people without regard to the outcome, devoting ourselves to your honor alone. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

  9. Gathering Around the WORDDeclaraion of ForgivnessGod rejoices when we repent and return to His arms, as the prodigal sons and daughters. God redeems us through God’s grace poured out through Christ’s work on the cross. In the name of our Lord and Savior, we have been forgiven. We are a new and different people from this moment on. Thanks be to God, Amen.

  10. Gathering Around the WORDGloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

  11. Gathering Around the WORDPassing of the Peace of Christ Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)

  12. Proclaiming the WORDMessage to the Youth/Prayer of Illumination

  13. 1On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. 7When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Luke 14:1, 7-14)

  14. 9and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place', and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Luke 14:1, 7-14)

  15. 12He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Luke 14:1, 7-14)

  16. 1Let mutual love continue. 2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16)

  17. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." 6So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16)

  18. 7Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 15Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Proclaiming the WORDScripture Reading(Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16)
