The Power of Generosity ”و لا تنسوا الفضل بينكم“ 2/237 • “And do not forget graciousness between you.” 2/237 • Key word is al-Fadl. • Translated as graciousness which means kindness and warm courtesy. • Others have translated al-Fadl as liberality.
Beautiful Meanings of al-Fadl • Generosity • Nobility of thought and character. • Mentality of abundance • The quality of being warmhearted, considerate, humane and sympathetic. • The quality of unselfishness.
The Best Example of Generosity • The prophet (salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was the most generous person in his community. • The great testimony of Jabir (radia Allahu anhu) about his love (salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to help and give. • “If I had a mountain of gold, I would not like to save any of it for more than three days, except something I put aside to pay debts.” (B)
The Context of this Passage • This section is found in ayah 2/237. • “And if you divorce them before you have touched them and you have already specified for them an obligation, then give half of what you specified – unless they forgo their right or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract forgoes it. And to waive it is nearer to taqwa. And do not forget graciousness between you. Indeed, Allah sees all what you do.”
A Matter of Divorce • Some shariah rulings of divorce are explained. • The divorce takes place before the marriage is consummated. • The husband has already appointed the amount of the dowry. • Legally, each one takes half of the dowry after the divorce is pronounced.
An Act of Nobility • “but if you give up your legal right is nearer to Taqwa (righteousness).” • Waiving the legal right (half of the dowry) is an act of loyalty to the covenant of marriage. • This good treatment is recommended in every case of Talaaq.
