  3. AGENDA

  4. Scientist Readings & Fakebook VL: 0 Each student will complete a reading about a scientist. After reading, use the Fakebook worksheet to create a profile about the scientist. John Dalton Joseph John (JJ) Thompson Ernest Rutherford Niels Bohr

  5. Atomic Theory Reading VL: 0 Read pages 116-117 in the science textbook. Create a postcard in your INB explaining the current atomic theory. The current atomic theory states that…

  6. Exit Ticket VL: 0 Describe what we know about atoms now.

  7. DO NOW VL: 0

  8. VOCABULARY

  9. AGENDA

  10. Chemical Reaction Demo VL: 0 On page __ in your INB.. • Title the page “Elephant Toothpaste” • Write the chemical reaction 2H2O22H2O + O2 • Create a T-Chart labeled with “Before” and “After” • Draw a Before picture of the reaction Elephant Toothpaste 2H2O2 2H2O + O2 ________________________ Before After

  11. Chemical Reaction Demo VL: 0 The teacher will mix hydrogen peroxide with yeast. Beneath the T-Chart, write 3 observations about the reaction. Draw an After picture of the reaction Elephant Toothpaste 2H2O2 2H2O + O2 ________________________ Before After

  12. Video: Matter VL: 0 Watch video On page __ in your INB, complete Cornell Notes defining matter, density, and atoms.

  13. Special Assignment or Top Ten VL: 2 Complete either a Special Assignment or Top Ten on page __ in your INB.

  14. Exit Slip VL: 0 In one sentence, define matter.

  15. DO NOW VL: 0

  16. VOCABULARY

  17. AGENDA

  18. Dry Ice Lab VL: 2 TASK: Examine states of matter using dry ice. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Put on goggles. 2. Get a piece of dry ice from teacher and place dry ice on edge of table. 3. Make observations about the dry ice. REMEMBER: YOU MUST WRITE A HYPOTHESIS BEFORE BEGINNING EACH TASK.

  19. Dry Ice Lab VL: 2 INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Add colored water to the dry ice and water. 2. Record observations. 3. Add soap to the colored water. 4. Record observations. REMEMBER: YOU MUST WRITE A HYPOTHESIS BEFORE BEGINNING EACH TASK.

  20. Dry Ice Lab VL: 2 TEST TUBE EXPLOSION INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Fill film canister about 2/3 of the way with water. 2. Teacher places a small piece of dry ice in each group’s canister. 3. Place the top on the film canister. 4. Make sure test tube is not pointing towards a classmate or towards your face. Watch what happens, and record your observations.

  21. Aluminum Foil Fold VL: 2 TASK: With a partner, cut aluminum foil until you have the smallest piece you can make. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cut the piece of aluminum foil in half. 2. Put aside one half and cut the other in half again. 3. Repeat until you can no longer cut the piece of foil.

  22. Aluminum Foil Fold VL: 2 With your group discuss the answers to the following questions and then write your answers on page __ in your INB. • Make 3 observations about the aluminum. • What do you notice about the original piece of aluminum foil and the smallest pieces? • Is the smallest piece of foil still aluminum foil? • Would it be possible to have a piece of aluminum so small that it is no longer aluminum? • What physical change has taken place? Explain.

  23. States of Matter VL: 0 States of Matter Class Demo

  24. Rutherford Lab VL: 2 TASK: Model Rutherford’s experiment about atomic structure. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Take turns “shooting” marbles under the cardboard. 2. Make predictions about the shape under the cardboard based on how the marble reacts. 3. Record your findings on the handout. 4. Read the background information about Rutherford and his experiment.

  25. Rutherford Lab VL: 0 Rutherford Experiment Video

  26. Rutherford Lab VL: 2 Post-Lab Questions: Answer the following questions in complete sentences on page __ of your INB. 1. Which component of the experiment did your marble simulate? 2. Which component of the experiment did your hidden shape simulate? 3. If the nucleus occupies only a small percentage of the overall space in an atom, what occupies the rest of the atom?

  30. Atom Reading & Foldable VL: 0 READ: Atoms FOLDABLE: Create a foldable in your INB using the following terms: - Nucleus - Electron Cloud - Proton - Neutron - Electron

  31. Class Atom VL: 0 Each student will get a card that says “Proton”, “Neutron”, or “Electron”. The students will make a model an atom in the room with the protons and neutrons in the nucleus and the electrons in the electron cloud.

  32. Video: Atoms VL: 0 Bill Nye Video about Atoms

  33. Exit Ticket VL: 0 List the 3 parts of the atom and where they are located.
