  3. VIDEO notes: The Life of Mark Twain out West • When the Civil War started in 1861, Twain went west to Nevada where his brother was working. • He tried prospecting for several months, but was unsuccessful, so he started writing for newspapers.

  4. 3. Bret Harte, in California, heard about his writing and offered him a job. 4. After challenging another editor to a duel, he had to leave the state. 5. He went to San Francisco to work on The Californian, Bret Harte’s newspaper.

  5. While working in San Francisco, he often went on vacation to Angel’s Camp where a friend lived. • They often went to the tavern there to shoot pool. • In the tavern one day, a previous steamboat captain told Twain the story of the jumping frog.

  6. 9. Twain knew many of the men in the camp and identified with them because he had prospected for a while himself. 10. He undoubtedly saw them gambling, racing horses, etc. while he was there.

  8. Create an organizer showing a) dialect b) customs c) characterization d) setting e) narrator that create local color in the story. (See your notes on local color.)

  9. Using your organizer, write a composition on Mark Twain and the story. Include • at least one technique which Twain used to create local color in the story & • a description of how the story’s setting reflects Twain’s personal life as displayed in the video. (See pp. 460-461 for additional biographical info.)

Paragraph 1: Introduction – include author’s name, name of story, and thesis (statement of main idea) Paragraph 2 (body): show how the setting of the story reflects Twain’s life (provide detailed support) Paragraph 3 (body): show how Twain used at least one technique to create local color (provide detailed support) Paragraph 4: write a suitable conclusion
