  3. Information • Grades are updated - include all of last week’s work - many missing assignments • 22 Academic days remaining - IPR grades entered • MIRPL Assignment - due dates approaching - May 7 (Period 3) - May 13

  4. Current Events • Venezuelan fights - parliament gets into a fist fight over issues with the election results • Sherpas and climbers get in fight - occurred on Mt. Everest - both sides agree to “climb nice”

  6. TPS: Thinking about the major economic activity of Oceania (tourism), why does the region remain as “traditional” as it has over the years? Explain your thinking.

  7. Culture • Language - over 1100 languages in the region - English is the most common • Religion - multiple religions - Christianity common - traditional native religions • Arts and Crafts - baskets and woven items

  8. Traditional Life • Polynesia - history of village wars - wooden homes, heavier construction • Micronesia - family groups - peaceful • Melanesians - coastal dwellers

  9. Taro • Taro - important food - used in many dishes • Plant root - boiled - breads, puddings - Poi

  10. Changes in Oceania • Rapid urbanization - creates problems • City size - increasing in size - urban sprawl • Education improving • Communication systems - connects small islands

  11. Oceania- Reading • Read through the section as a group - jigsaw the sections - assign group roles • Complete the DRA - some require you to make inferences - others are straight forward • Share answers and information from previous reading
