AREAS OF ENGAGEMENT • Course development – ICT, Health, programme evaluation • Roundtable conferences which became a place for research planning • Joint publications • Professional development and staff training • Led to additional funding – DELPHE funded the initial contact • Joint research projects – gender, HIV/AIDS, pedagogy, literacy and leadership, ICT in education
Impact of Partnership: • Collaborative generation of knowledge • International publications • Improved partnership, research and linkages beyond DELPHE • New and mutual understandings of research • Teams built around research areas • ‘Capacity’ development • Mutual, capacity to undertake culturally appropriate research, education of both partners
Issues: • Movement of individuals, development of shared understandings and core purposes – ownership • Genesis of partnership on the basis of personal relationships • Building beyond core funding • Traditional notions of knowledge and role of university underpin many of these partnerships • Matching the agendas of both organisations • Cultural issues – power, social styles, organisational ways of being • Relational issues among team members • Development of increasingly transparent procedures for decision making
Future agendas of HE • Research relevant and salient to the issues in the South (and the North) • pick your partners • Recognition of regional/collaborative institutions as emerging centres of research excellence • Mutuality and balance in structure and process of partnership
