Mission Statement • The IEEE chapter of Communications & Signal Processing Societies seeks to be the organization of choice for communications and signaling processing technologists in the Central Texas Area and to provide education and networking for those professionals. Founding EMBS in Austin • Key Sequence: • 2013: Vision was conceived by scheduling around 8 talks around different aspects of applying technology to health. • Feb. 2016: BHI – Sponsored by EMBS & ComSoc, Las Veags: Organized and moderated 1/2 workshop on “SDN, Big Data and impact on Health” funded by ComSoc • Mar. 2016: Himms/IHP, Las Vegas - Organized session and made presentation at Himms/IHP funded by ComSoc. • Nov 2016: Focus Groups – Organized two focus group sessions in oronto and Austin sponsored by ComSoc • Filing for EMBS petition and receiving endorsement and support from CTS Chair (Leslie). • Holding focus groups Approval by IEEE MGA end of December for establishing CTS EMBS in Austin. • There are officers set for EMBS including Trevor Goodman, Dustin D. Trammell and Cliff Sze that I’m working with independently. • Held first successful EMBS meeting Jan 18 with Dr. Chris Moriates, MD Assistant Dean for Healthcare Value Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Dell Medical School, UT Austin • EMBS budget will finance building EMBS chapter from ground up engaging with Austin medical community. • Capitalize on support of ComSoc/SP and Computer chapters for EMBS growth.
EMBS vision is to exemplify technologies of • wireless (like blue tooth, wifi) & cellular (like 4G, LTE, 5G) Communications, • Signal Processing such as cognitive recognition and • Computing such as cognitive computation, AI, Big Data/Analytics • As a disruptive core technologies will lead to a great transformation in key markets such as health and wellness.
2017 SWOT • Strengths • Great support from ComSoc & SP (Funding). • Support from SomSoc to EMBS. • Great venue at AT&T (over 5 years). • Healthy & respectable relationship with UT. • Opportunity • Diverse set of intriguing topics and domain expert speakers. • Opportunity to collaborate with Computer Chapter & EMBS. • Strong DL support. • Media tools for virtual conferencing. • Weakness • Funding typically arrive 2nd half of he year leaving the first half exposed. • Commitment towards holding workshops.
