  1. Do Now: • Atoms are composed of what 3 subatomic particles? • _______________ • _______________ • _______________ • When an atom loses an electron it becomes • Atoms are very small. How do they combine to make larger things? • __________________________________________________________

  2. Agenda: • Semester Overview • Unit Overview (Calendar Activity) • Pre-Quiz • Grading Pre-Quiz • How are Atoms Held Together? • The Octet Rule • The HONC Rule • Borax Lab

  3. Semester 2 Overview • This semester we are going to study how atoms combine to make bigger things. • There are 2 main ways this happens on the microscopic level. • Chemical Bonding vs. Intermolecular Forces • (Unit 4) (Unit 5) • Then we will study how those bonds impact everything we see around us on the macroscopic level. • Properties of Solids and Liquids and Gas Laws • (also Unit 5) (Unit 6)

  4. Unit Overview (A DAY Calendar Activity) • Take out your calendar and examine it. Fill in the section above and below it following the directions in italics.

  5. Unit Overview (B DAY Calendar Activity) • Take out your calendar and examine it. Fill in the section above and below it following the directions in italics.

  6. Unit 4 Prequiz • You have 10 minute to take this quiz • Circle Pre at the top of the page • Please remember to write your answers on the blanks next to the number. • This quiz does not count toward your grade. • When you are done keep your prequiz at your desk.

  7. (4.1) The Octet Rule, Bonding, And You Chemical Bonding

  8. Objectives: • SWBAT to explain the basic nature of how atoms combine to form larger substances. • SWBAT explain the difference between atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds. • SWBAT use the Octet rule to predict what the stable ions are for each element. • SWBAT use the Octet rule to predict how many electrons each element wants in a chemical bond.

  9. Agenda: • Semester Overview • Unit Overview (Calendar Activity) • Pre-Quiz • Grading Pre-Quiz • How are Atoms Held Together? • The Octet Rule • The HONC Rule • Borax Lab

  10. How are Atoms Held Together? • The nucleus of every atom is positively charged due to its protons. • The electrons surrounding every atom are negativelycharged and attracted to the positive nucleus like a magnet. • When two atoms bond, both of their nuclei attract the electronsbetween them. • This is called a bond!

  11. The Octet Rule • The group number determines the number of valenceelectrons • Atoms are most stable when they have a full valence shell, like the Noble Gases. • Octet Rule – Atoms want 8 electrons and will form bonds to get that many electrons.

  12. The Octet rule • Atoms on the left of the periodic table are more likely to ___________ electrons because they are characterized by low __________________________. • Atoms on the right of the periodic table are more likely to ___________ electrons because they are characterized by high __________________________.

  13. The Octet Rule

  14. The HONC rule • Due to their positions on the periodic table and the Octet Rule you can remember how many electrons these common atoms want by “HONC”ing
