  2. Introduction • Horace Pippin was a born artist. He was incredible in many different ways including his talent, and heroic behavior. He was more than an artist he was a hero. Art calmed him down and helped him get through tough times for example when he was in the military. I hope you learn about something new, or something very interesting.

  3. Early Life • Horace Pippin was born on February 22 1888 in West Chester Pennsylvania although he moved to New York [state] when he was little. His love of art started when he was just 7. • He worked odd jobs on a farm, and was a junk dealer, an iron worker, and a local hotel porter. • When he was 19 he joined the army, and was sent to the depressing trenches of World War I in Europe.

  4. World War I Experience • Like other artists that served in WWI, Horace Pippen kept journals and wrote letters about his experiences. • The experiences haunted him and influenced his drawings. • These drawings displayed the horrors of war, showing the death and suffering, through his art. • During his service he was shot in the arm by a sniper his arm was paralyzed he was in horrible pain, and he would never forget the suffering in his later years.

Accomplishments'/Obstacles' • Horace Pippin’s wound caused him, and many others to be sent back to the states a later rule in World War II that if all your brothers got killed in action you have to leave. • He was called names when he was older, but in my opinion that didn’t stop him from becoming the most creative artist in the 30’s. • He was an overnight sensation after he entered two of his paintings in an art show. The people adored his work, and the thought he put into it.

  6. Influences • Horace Pippin was talented enough to be a simple artist, but he took it to the next level. He made beautiful masterpieces. • The wound in his arm kept him from painting, but he soon could move his hand, and began to paint starting his fame and career. • He loved to draw when he was little, and the memory kept him drawing in the trenches showing his skills to other soldiers.
