  2. RECAP Econ Healthcare limited was founded by Mr Ong Chu Poh and establish in1987 with the mission to provide high quality and customer-focused healthcare services. Econ Healthcare Limited • Residential nursing care services: • Day care services • Respite care services • Physiotherapy services • Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine (“TCM”) treatments • And ancillary services like: • Hospital management services • Nursing care training • Ambulance services • Home care services • Sale and rental of healthcare equipment and accessories

Ageing population a serious problem in Singapore due to low birth rate: increase at a per annum rate of 3.1%, from 7% in 1998 to 19% in 2030 Demand for Nursing Home beds set to increase: 25% to 40% by year 2010 Potential in Region: Rapid ageing population will only increase the demand for healthcare services PRESENT SITUATION

EXPANSION IN MALAYSIA Kuala Lumpur Chinese Maternity Hospital • partnership between Ong and NV Multi Corporation Berhad group managing director Datuk David Kong.  • The centre accommodates only 100 residents to ensure maximum attention and care is given to each patient.   • The centre specializes in short- and long-term rehabilitation and post-hospital treatment, particularly for senior citizens.   • Other services include home care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, care-giving training and 24-hour ambulance services.

EXPANSION IN CHINA • Potential place for healthcare service development: • Opening up of China and its entrance to the WTO • Cheaper production of equipment and meeting the need of • Answer to need of professional healthcare services in China to meet up with ageing population • Create a retired village for ageing population in PRC: • PRC have implemented a 1 child policy to solve over-population problems • Ageing population in PRC needs attention to their medical and healthcare services

Problems/Obstacles: • Recent visit of PM Lee to Taiwan caused strains between the ties of Singapore and PRC • Hard to penetrate into China market due to “tight” government policies in PRC • Most parts of China are either rural or sub-urban • Mass in China still believes in Chinese healthcare methods • Solutions /Recommendations: • Rebuild good political relations with PRC (dependent on Singapore government • Increase confidence of the PRC government on the Econ healthcare’s professionalism in the medical industry • Educate the citizens of PRC about the combination of ‘East meets West’ medical treatment
