  1. Brookeville Bypass Final Design Presentation Initech May 6, 2004

  2. The Initech Team • Project Manager – Matt Young • Assistant PM – Jack Kwait-Blank • Transportation Engineer – Amanda Gassman • Structural Engineer – Matt Holland • Geotechnical Engineer – Diana Castro • Drafting Engineer – Joseph Lemich

  3. General • Purpose • To remove the continuously increasing traffic congestion from the town of Brookeville • To improve traffic safety and transportation operations • To preserve the historic district

  4. General • Needs • Traffic is estimated to be 18,000 vehicles per day in the year 2020 with the encroaching development of the nearby area of Olney • Replace the substandard road geometries that exist currently • A stop sign located at the junction of 97 and Market Street impedes traffic flow and creates adverse environmental conditions • Operating at a Level of Service (LOS) D and is estimated to deteriorate to LOS F during peak PM hours in the year 2020 if no improvements are made • The accident rate in Brookeville is 154.1 per one hundred million vehicle miles (acc/100mvm)

  5. General • Classification: Minor / Rural Arterial • Design Speed: 55 MPH • Posted Speed: 45 MPH • Total Length: 6050 ft • Max Superelevation Rate (e): 6% • Stopping Sight Distance = 495 ft • Minimum Radius of curvature = 1100 ft • Crest/Sag K=115/114

  6. General • Crossings: • Market Street: Grade-separated • At-grade at MD97

  7. Alternate Alignment • Alternate Design • Pros • 1 Bridge • 1 Culvert • 400 ft parkland • Cons • Right of Way • 9 Houses • Wetlands • Lower Design Speed • Very Long Horizontal Alignment

  8. Alignment Horizontal Alignment

  9. Alignment Vertical Alignment proposed current surface level

  10. Alignment Typical Section

  11. Alignment Typical Sections • Typical Sections • 2 Lanes • 12 ft lanes • 6 ft shoulders • Open road • Non-divided

  12. Alignment Right-of-Way Impacts • 1850 ft of parkland including 200 ft of Shingle Oak Forest    • No wetlands impacted • Cross 2 streams, culvert Meadow Branch Stream, bridge Reddy Branch Stream • Interacts with one house • Does not effect proposed Park and Ride • Does cross through M-NCPPC Reserved land • Avoids Brookeville Historical District • Cross Market Street, grade-separated with bridge

  13. Alignment • Structures • Bridge • Culvert • Cut and Fill Volumes • Cut: 175534 cy • Fill: 61492 cy • Net: 114042 cy cut

  14. Pavement Design • Design ESAL: 5.5 Million DPSI = po – pt = 4.2 – 2.5 = 1.7 ZR = 92% = -1.405 So = 0.45 MR = 5000 MR = 40000 W18 = 5,500,000,000

  15. Pavement Design Process: SN = a1D1 + a2D2m2 SN1 = 2.47 (using solver) = a1D1 2.47 = .44 * D1 D1 = 5.6136 inches SN = 5.3 (using solver) SN2 = SN - a1D1 SN2 = 5.3 - .44 * 5.6136 SN2 = 2.83 2.83 = a2D2m2 2.83 = .17 * D2 * 1.25 D2 = 13.3176 inches

  16. Pavement Design Results: Asphalt thickness D1 = 6 inches Base thickness D2 = 14 inches

  17. Hydraulics • Drainage: • 9 ft long 16.7% safety grading • 4:1 slope for drainage • 2 ft wide ditch • Culverts: • 10 ft x 10 ft • Thickness 5 ft on sides and 5.5 ft on bottom • Large for floodplain planning • 100 year • located inside floodplain • 198 ft long

  18. D C B A Hydraulics

  19. Structures • Bridge • Crosses Market Street and Stream • Concrete Deck and Steel Girders • 300 ft x 42 ft • Rounded Columns • Steel Girders • Chosen for cost-effectiveness • Piles for strength in poor soil conditions near creek

  20. Structures Culverts • 10 ft x 10 ft • 198 ft long • Water maintenance

  21. Traffic After Construction After Construction of Bypass • Bypass: • Peak Level of Service:  B • Off-Peak Level of Service:  A • Old MD-97: • Peak Level of Service:  A • Off-Peak Level of Service:  A

  22. Traffic After Construction

  23. Traffic After Construction • Intersections • South: traffic signal • North: traffic signal • Delay: Minimal  • Lights will be phase timed according to time of day and majority direction of flow

  24. Construction • Special Construction Issues • Environmental Issues • Close to Residential Area • Noise Concerns • Resident Disruptions • Schedule • Start: 5/13/04 • Finish: 11/29/04 • Total Duration: 6.5 months

  25. Construction

  26. Cost Estimating • Category 1: $1.2 M • Category 2: $5.4 M • Category 3: $1 M • Category 4: $1 M • Category 5: $210 K • Category 6: $9 K • Category 7: $200 K • Category 8: $300 K • Total Estimated Cost: $16.6 M
