  3. MITOSIS • Start with one cell • Ends with two new cells that are identical to the original cell (with the same number of chromosomes) • New cells are called daughter cells

  6. Meiosis • Meiosis is a special process of cell division that results in the formation of gamete cells (sperm and egg) • Each gamete cell has only half the number of chromosomes as the original parent cell.

  7. Principles of Meiosis • Independent Assortment – chromosomes separate into gamete cells “independently” of each other. The result is that each gamete cell has a different set of the parent’s chromosomes. • Crossing Over – chromosomes can trade genes among themselves, so that a gene on one chromosome can end up on a different chromosome.
