Identity and Place. The country or area we live in (or come from) often has a big impact on our identity. Our nationality, our language, our accent, our clothes, our diet, our hobbies and interests – these are just some of the things that are influenced by the place in which we live.

  1. Identity and Place • The country or area we live in (or come from) often has a big impact on our identity. • Our nationality, our language, our accent, our clothes, our diet, our hobbies and interests – these are just some of the things that are influenced by the place in which we live.

  2. Picture Poems Aims: to use interesting vocabulary in our writing to use a variety of language techniques to produce a picture poem using different language techniques

  3. Picture Poems • On the next slide is a picture poem based on a specific place – Las Vegas. • Your task is to identify each of the different language techniques that have been used. • Write a definition in your book for each technique you can see in the poem.

  4. Money, money, money! Tourists fill her pockets with money as she sparkles her wealth. Neon lights shine like a million stars in a city that never sleeps. The city is a showgirl, she dazzles the crowds. Hungry slot machines cackle with delight. People rush to her like moths to a flame. Fast, frenzied, frantic cars drive through the night. Could you resist her charms?

  5. Now it’s your turn! • Work by yourself or in pairs to produce a picture poem about a place important to you. • Use one of the ideas from the following slides or find your own picture on the Internet. • Don’t forget to use as many different language techniques as you can think of.
