What to you are the central themes in Plato’s allegory of the cave? Question # 1:
Plato perceives how humanity comes to grasp on what are the realities in life. People mistake the identity of what is real, from things which only exist in our minds Points out how the prisoners mistake the difference between a real object from the shadow that it casts. There are no permanent understandings that the human mind is capable of achieving. There will always be things that the mind will mistake as reality. In such a way that the reality they conceive is merely a reflection of a concept formed by what they believe to be true.
Relating this to the film "Memento", the reality that the main character has created is one in which he based on what he believed to be true to his own mind. - This fact is shown on how he had ignored the statements made by the character of "Teddy". Wherein he was provided with the reality of facts that are true as opposed to what was true to the character of Lenny.
How does the mind separate false reality from true reality? Question # 2:
Reality is highly subjective contrary to what majority of the population believe. Reality asks the question of what is “true”, or what is “actual”.
PTOLEMY: THE EARTH WAS THE CENTRE OF OUR UNIVERSE Modern times: the sun is at the centre of our solar system
PEOPLE believed IT so much that they executed those who resented or challenged this “reality”
REALITY IS DIFFERENT WITH EVERY PERSON.A PERSON MAY BELIEVE THIS BUT IT MAY BE UNTRUE FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
burden of choosing between two options instinct reasoning For example, a sudden death of a loved one or something that was not expected to happen Reality can be chosen
Our reality= memories Lenny’s reality= photographs with descriptions Leonard’s short term memory loss made his reality a bit different from ours.
He chose to continue what he was doing convincing himself that he’s right and that Teddy’s just someone manipulating him. As long as they were not in the photographs, they were not reality to lenny.Teddy: antagonistlenny: protagonist
The movie closes with Lenny saying, “We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I’m no different.” Lenny’s “mirrors” were his memory devices. What sort of “mirrors” do people with normal memories rely on to remind themselves who they are? Question # 3:
Those things that came from our knowledge of the past. • What we can easily recall. Normal people rely on their long term memories
We need to see others perspectives . • They are our mirrors. Other people and their views
When Lenny jots down Teddy’s license number, he asks: “Do I lie to myself to be happy? In your case, Teddy... yes, I will.” What does that say about truth? Question # 4:
Truth is relevant, unstable and inconstant. Truth is all about the perspective and belief of a person towards it.
Discuss how Lenny’s actions follow closely either some of the 4 Noble Truths or all of them. Question # 5:
Lenny suffers or is dissatisfied because of his condition and that he cannot remember new memories, and yet he feels this need to “avenge” his wife. the feeling Lenny had of happiness fading away First noble truth: life is characterized by suffering
Lenny’s need to avenge his wife wanted vengeance because it was one of the last memories he had of his wife The only thing that could make him happy Second noble truth: there is a cause for suffering
THIRD NOBLE TRUTH: THERE IS A WAY OUT OF SUFFERING/ ELIMINATING IT • Tried to erase the memories of his wife • Cannot fully achieve this
FOURTH NOBLE TRUTH: THERE IS A PATH LEADING TO THE CESSATION OF SUFFERING • His attempts to kill John G. • He is on this path… forever
