Service Learning • active participation in service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community. • Students provide service in the community to public, nonprofit agencies, civic, charitable and governmental organizations and school campus (not as part of a school sponsored club or organization) • Hours must be documented on log sheets

  3. Where Should I Volunteer? • Agencies/ Organizations associated with: - Animals - Arts and Culture - Child Care/ Education/ Libraries/ Youth - Disabilities/ Healthcare/ Hospitals - Disaster Preparation and Recovery - Environmental - Government/ Law Enforcement - Homelessness - Parks and Recreation - Social Services

  4. Tier I • Graduation Requirement • 40 Hours • Hours documented on Tier I log sheet and turned into Service Learning Coordinator (Ms. Roberson)

  5. Additional Hours (Tier II and III) • In order to receive credit for any hours over 40, you must complete an Approval Form and submit it to Ms. Roberson 10 days prior to starting service. • Sheets are to be turned in regularly; a duplicate copy of all forms should be kept for personal records

  6. Tier II/ III • Tier II- 75 hours- Florida Academic Scholar (Required for Bright Futures Scholarship) • Tier III- 250 hours- Silver Cord Graduation Honors • Hours documented on Tier II/ III log sheet and turned into Service Learning Coordinator (Ms. Roberson).

  7. Silver Knight Program • The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards is one of the nation’s most highly regarded students award programs. • This program is to recognize students who have unselfishly applied their special knowledge and talents to contribute significant service to their schools and communities.

  8. Art Athletics Business Drama English & Literature Foreign Language General Scholarship Journalism Mathematics Music New Media Science Social Science Speech Vocational- Technical 15 Silver Knight Categories

  9. Silver Knight Requirements • Applicant must carry a 3.0 unweighted GPA • nominee's classroom interests should be directly related to their project’s category. • WHEN TO APPLY • Each nominee will be interviewed by a panel of judges.

  10. Silver Knight Awards • One Silver Knight winner chosen in each category will receive $1500, a Silver Knight Statue, and a medallion presented by American Airlines to honor the accomplishment. • Three Silver Knight Honorable Mention recipients in each category will receive $500 and an engraved plaque to honor the accomplishment.
