PURPOSE • Provide an overview of courses offered • Describe the course selection process • Review graduation requirements
English Mrs. Dernelle, Supervisor • Goals: - Develop communication skills - Develop writing skills - Develop grammar and vocabulary skills - Develop research techniques - Explore various forms of literature
Requirements • Every student is required to take four years or 20 credits of English. • Every student is required to pass HSPA LAL.

Mathematics Mrs. Heinzel, Supervisor • Goals: - Develop students’ analytical, critical thinking, and technological skills - Ensure students gain thorough competence in problem-solving, reasoning and proof, communications, connections and representation with regard to the mathematical content they are studying
Requirements • Every student is required to take four years or 20 credits of math. • Every student is required to pass HSPA Math.

Physical Education Mr. Frazier, Supervisor • Goals: Provide a base for a healthy life style. - 9th - Safety and Human Growth & Development - 10th - Driver Education - 11th - First Aid - 12th - Family Living and Problem Solving Promote sportsmanship and respect for differences in physical activity settings. Introduce students to various activities to promote lifelong physical activity.
Requirements • Every student is required to take and pass one year of Physical Education and Health for each year of enrollment.
Science Mrs. Heinzel, Supervisor • Goals: - Develop an understanding of the main concepts, themes, and laws developed within the domains of the biological and physical sciences, an awareness of the interrelatedness of the physical and biological worlds, and an appreciation of the diversity and complexity of the natural world. - Develop an understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry, the scientific enterprise, scientists and how they work, the multiple methods of science and the role of the imagination and creativity in science.
Requirements • Every student is required to take three years or 15 credits of Science. • Every student is required to take the state mandated Biology test at the completion of Biology.

Social Studies Mr. Ryan, Supervisor • Engage students in the critical analysis of historical and contemporary issues to foster the growth of caring and interested citizens.
Requirements • Every student is required to take and pass one year of World History. • Every student is required to take and pass two years of United States History.
Electives • Psychology • Citizen and the Law • Pop Music and History • Global Issues: Past, Present, and Future • Financial Literacy
World LanguagesMr. Ryan, Supervisor • Goals: -Understand the perspectives of a culture that generate its pattern of behaviors, ways of life, world views, and contributions - Speak and understand a language other than English
Requirements • Every student must take one year of a world language in order to meet graduation requirements. • Most colleges require a minimum of two years of a world language as a part of the admission requirement. General rule of thumb is three years of a consecutive world language.

Requirements • Every student is required to complete one year of visual or performing arts (5 credits). • Every student is required to complete one year of practical arts (5 credits). • Every student is required to take 2.5 credits of Financial Literacy. (Financial Literacy, Fundamentals of Contemporary Business and Investing in the Stock Market) • A minimum of 15 credits of electives is required in order to meet graduation requirements.
Course Selection Process • Meet with parents providing overview of high school program • Provide students with an overview of courses and provide them with access the Curriculum Guidebook available on the school’s web page • Schedule date and time to meet with student to select courses • Student and parent can review course requests in Parent Portal • Mail letter to parent and student indicating courses selected • Schedule will be distributed to student on the first day of school
Credit requirements for grade level • Grade 10 30 earned credits • Grade 11 60 earned credits • Grade 12 Eligibility to meet all graduation requirements by June of the current school year Every student is required to carry a minimum of 35 credits each year and a maximum of 40 credits each year.
Graduation Requirements • Pass state and Rutherford High School course requirements. • Pass all areas of the HSPA and any other state mandated test. • Complete a minimum of 130 credits.
