Agenda 1. Aguamilpa 2. El Cajon 3. CE-EQUAL-W2 4. Conclusion 2008 MEXICO
Objectives • Develop an uncalibrated water quality model for Aguamilpa and El Cajon reservoirs. • Develop great friendships with our counterparts in Mexico. • Identify the data and information that we need to finish the project. • Visualize and understand the environmental and social impacts of the reservoirs. 2008 MEXICO
Aguamilpa • Aguamilpa reservoir was developed to meet the demand for electric energy in the northwestern area of Mexico. • The Aguamilpa dam is located at Santiago River in the state of Nayarit, 52 km north from the capital, Tepic part of the Santiago and Huaynamota. • Measuring 187 meters from the base to the top of the curtain, the Aguamilpa Dam stands to be one of the tallest such dams in the world and the third tallest in Mexico. 2008 MEXICO

El Cajon • The hydropower plant el Cajón is part of the hydrological system of Santiago river, located in the hydrological region Lumber 12, known as Lerma – Santiago – Pacífico. • The reservoir is situated upstream of Aguamilpa dam and downstream of the confluence of Santiago river with Bolaños river. • The whole hydrological system is formed with 27 proyects. El Cajón has an extension of 60 km, and an installed power of 750 MW. 2008 MEXICO

Overview • Energy for Mexico • Water Quality • Social impacts and environmental impacts 2008 MEXICO
Data • We have collected meteorological data, we have part of the meteorological file. • Bathymetry files that we have generated with WMS. • Control files that we also produced from using WMS. • Data we need. • We need to collect more inflow and outflow to create water balance. • We also need to collect more samples and water quality parameters. 2008 MEXICO
CE-QUAL-W2 CE-QUAL-W2 is a 2-dimensional, laterally averaged, hydrodynamic and water quality model for rivers, estuaries, lakes, reservoirs and river basin systems. W2 models basic eutrophication processes such as temperature-nutrient-algae-dissolved oxygen-organic matter and sediment relationships. 2008 MEXICO
Required Files • Main used Files • Bathymetry File • Control File • Meteorological File • Other Files • Daily inflows (branches and tributaries) • Temperature inflows • Daily outflows from the dam • Shade File • Graph File • Constituent Output 2008 MEXICO

Model Projections • Develop a monitoring plan and also generate a calibrated model. • Generate a template for reservoirs located in tropical areas. • Apply proper agricultural and soil conservation management techniques or best management practices in the watershed would decrease phosphorus load reductions in reservoirs located in Mexico. 2008 MEXICO
