Plural and uncountable nouns with and without the Unit 74. We don’t use the before a noun when we mean something in general. Example I’m afraid of dogs. (not “the dogs”). When we mean particular dogs We say.. -I’m afraid of my neighbor’s dogs.

We don’t use the before a noun when we mean something in general. Example I’m afraid of dogs. (not “the dogs”)
When we mean particular dogs We say.. -I’m afraid of my neighbor’s dogs. -I’m afraid of the dogs at my neighbor’s house.
Examples • Doctors are paid more than teachers. • I like football / athletics / skiing / chess. • Do you like collect stamps? • My favorite subjects at school was history / English / physics.
We say.. most people / most dogs etc.. (not ’the most…’) Example - Most people like George.
We say the… when we mean something in particular. • Examples • I often listen to music. • but: The film wasn’t very good but I liked the music.
Examples • Way say.. • Are English people friendly? (English people in general) • but: Are the English people you know friendly? (only the English people you know, not in general)
We say.. • All cars have wheels. • but: All the students in the class like their teacher.
The difference between ‘something in general ‘ and ‘something in particular’ is not always very clear. • Example • Do you like apples? (apples in general) • Do you like green apples? (not all apples, but red apples is still general) • Did you like the apples we had with our meal last night? • ( particular apples)
