What is Relative-Age Dating? • A method of establishing the order of past geologic events shown in rocks and fossils. • Does not allow scientists to determine exact ages of rocks or fossils. • Includes Original Horizontality, Superposition, Cross-Cutting Relationships, and Inclusions. • Other principles, such as unconformities and correlation, help determine age and order as well.
Unconformities Create Challenges • What is an unconformity? A break in the rock record produced by erosion and/or non-deposition. • There are three types of unconformities: Nonconformity Disconformity Angular Unconformity
Fossil Correlation • The same fossils from rock layers in one location to rock layers in another location shows that the layers were deposited around the same time period even though the layers are of different material
