  2. Looking for information? Searching the Internet • Search engines use computer programs to look for information on the Internet • Users have to tell the search engine what to look for

  3. How search engines work? • Search engines, such as Google, crawl the internet, gathering information about millions of websites. • A search engine sorts through what it “knows” and lists the sites it “thinks” you want. You tell the search engine what you want by using Keywords.

  4. What are Keywords? • Keywords- the most important words you use to search for information about a topic, to find the information you want on the internet • In order to get the best search results, you need to choose your keywords carefully

  5. More is Better • In some ways, a search engine is like a well-trained dog. It will fetch what you want, but only if you use the right commands • Although single words are better commands for dogs, more words are better for search engines

  6. How do you choose keywords? • Beprecise– clear and exact • Use synonyms – words that mean the same or nearly the same • Use alternative ways to say or do something • Ask a question – what do you need to know? What colors are on the flag of Ireland?

  8. Results Page • Results page isthe screen showing what a search engine found in response to your keyword search • You have to weed through the results to find the information you are looking for • Sometimes there are too many results • That’s why we try to narrow our search
