  2. BASICS • LANGUAGE A – LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE • LANGUAGE B – LANGUAGE ACQUISITION LANGUAGE B HAS SIX PHASES • PHASE 1 – BEGGINNER (AB INITIO) • PHASE 6 – BILINGUAL (NEAR NATIVE)

  3. Past Program • Two Language B (Acquisition) classes one Language A (Language & Literature) • Push In Support available to students in Grade 6 – 8. • Language Acquisition Students placed in one section of other subjects to make support of students possible. • Grade 6 – 10 Language Acquisition Program • Grade 12 DP English Language Acquisition Program

  4. Implications • Number of Students Transitioning from Language B to A minimal. • No support for students who transition from Language B to A. • One section of Grade level with a much higher number of Language B students. • Results of Language B students in IB Diploma subjects not high.

  5. Rationale for Change • Change in English Language ability from Primary School. • Smaller number of students requiring a Language Acquisition Program. • Increase the number of students transitioning from Language B to A • Prepare students better for English Language of Instruction programs in DP and university.

  6. New Model • Push In support available for students in G 6 – 10, in Humanities, Science (G 6-9) and Language A • Mixed ability classes in MYP with lower numbers of Language B students with better learning opportunities. • No Language B classes past Grade 9. • Differentiation and Academic Advisement available to any student in Grade 10-12 with Language B needs.
