Some Expectations • Come to class with your binder, planner and pencil • Make a good decision about where you sit • Listen when it’s time to listen • Read when it’s time to read • Talk when it’s time to talk • Don’t interrupt – it’s rude and it bugs me! • All work will be done in class – it is YOUR responsibility to get it done and • turn it in during the time allotted
What is our Focus? • Summaries • Different Parts of a Summary • Writing good summaries • Things that should/should not be in a summary • Correcting summaries
Summary • A synthesis of the important ideas in a text presented in a condensed form. • Or in other words: Giving important ideas in the text by giving the beginning, middle, and end ideas of the passage.
A Summary Must Have: • Topic Sentence • At least 3 detail sentences (with at least 1 detail from the beginning, 1 from the middle, and 1 from the end) • Transition words to connect the detail sentences: • First, second, last, also, in addition, next, then, finally
Read Aloud • Enemy Pie
Enemy Pie Enemy Pie tells us about a boy who becomes friends with his best Enemy. First, the boy wants to have the Perfect summer, but Jeremy Ross becomes his enemy. Next, the boy’s dad tells him that he can get rid of his enemy with Enemy Pie. The boy has to spend one whole day with his enemy and finds out that he kind of likes him. Finally, the boy finds out that there’s nothing bad in the pie and becomes friends with Jeremy Ross.
