Biome Tropical Savanna
General Description The tropical savanna receives more rainfall than deserts but less than tropical forests. They are also called grasslands when they are covered with many types of grasses. Fires and large animals prevent trees from growing.
Abiotic (non-living) Factors The tropical savanna has very warm temperatures and seasonal rainfall. The soil in this biome is compact. There are also many fires because of lightening.
Dominant Producers (Plants) Producers are the plants in the area. There are large grasses present. There are also trees and shrubs that can tolerate very little rain and are fire resistant.
Dominant Consumers (Animals) There are large carnivores in the tropical savanna. They include lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs. There are also herbivores such as elephants, giraffes, and zebras. Other consumers include ostriches, baboons, and different types of insects.
Geographic Distribution There are tropical savannas in large parts of Eastern Africa. They are also found in southern Brazil and northern Australia. They are mostly found on three continents.
Conclusion The tropical savanna is a challenging biome to live because of the seasonal rainfall and fires. The animals and plants that live here are well-equipped for this environment.
