What is Sociology Part 1 • Sociology: The scientific study of human social life, such as; groups, societies, language, beliefs, values, material items, and rules of conduct • Why are some things accepted in some cultures, while the same things are considered taboo in others?
What is Sociology Part 1 • Sociology specifically studies: • Society’sValues- what is important? • Beliefs – spiritually, or religion? • Material Objects – what goods are sought after? • Language – how do people communicate? • Rules of Conduct – what behavior is ok?
What is Sociology Part 1 • Sociology examines groups in the following way: • How do groups form? • How do the groups change? • How do individuals act within those groups?
What is Sociology Part 2 • Social Facts: Facts surrounding you, which influence your personal beliefs • EX: geography, parents’ religion, school, etc. • Socialization: The process by which we learn to become a member of our society. • Sociology teaches us to question our beliefs by using scientific methods and by considering different points of view.
What is Sociology Part 2 • Symbolic Interactionism: A sociological theory that focuses on relationships among individuals within a society through communication and the exchange of meaning through language and symbols. • Symbolic Interactionist believe communication is the way in which people make sense of their social worlds.
What is Sociology Part 2 • Functionalism: A sociological theory that focuses on understanding the role or contribution of some event, activity, or institution to the workings of society as a whole. • This perspective is derived from Comte and Durkheim and emphasizes large-scale social institutions and processes.
What is Sociology Part 2 • Marxism/Conflict Theory: A sociological theory that focuses the approach of Karl Marx, most significantly in regards to concern about power, conflict, and ideology. • This perspective is most commonly applied to capitalism and economic systems. • Marxist thinkers tend to take on an activist stance in addition to a scholarly one.
What is Sociology Part 2 • Feminist Theory:Begins from the perspective that women’s lives and experiences have largely been ignored and must be brought to the forefront of sociological thinking.
What is Sociology Part 2 • Postmodern Theory: Takes the position that social life is not based on any kind of linear history, but is rather always in flux. The media is often seen as a key player in how people understand their lives.
