What is Asbestos? • Naturally occurring family of minerals • Formed by Magnesium and Silicon • Hollow microscopic fibers are nearly indestructible & can be densely packed • Three main types of asbestos • Chrysotile (white, most common) • Amosite (brown, 4% of ACBM, short fiber) • Crocidolite (blue, green) • Invisible to the naked eye

  6. Commercial Uses • Popular building Material because: • Strength • Will not burn • Will not corrode • Good insulator • Economical • Categories of building materials • Surfacing, Thermal Systems Insulation, Miscellaneous

Building Material Uses • Surfacing Materials • Sprayed-on/troweled-on: • Fire proofing • Acoustical • Decorative • Thermal Systems Insulation • Insulation on piping, boilers, tanks, ducts • Miscellaneous Materials • Floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roofing, siding, lab equipment, gloves, curtains, brake liners

  10. Health Effects • Inhalation hazard • Fibers are particles, fibrils (5 microns) • Respiratory system • Upper and lower system • Health problems associated with asbestos exposure • Asbestosis • Mesothelioma • Lung cancer

  11. Dose-Response Relationship • No acute effects • Chronic effects with latency period • 15 to 45 years to develop • Response is directly related to exposure • Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) • 0.1 f/cc - 8 hour Time Weighted Average • Air clearance for abatement projects • 0.01 f/cc

  12. Fiber Release Concerns • Friable vs. Non-friable • Disturbance of materials matrix • Compare with abatement levels • Airborne asbestos is invisible • May take up to 40 hours to settle • Damage & deterioration • Smoking& asbestos • Synergistic relationship

Controlling Exposure • Identification of asbestos containing materials (inspections) • Minimizing disturbances • No cutting, drilling, abrading, floor care • Notify employer if suspect a disturbance • Cleanup procedures/practices • 14 hours of additional training • Filtered vacuums, wet methods, engineering controls, drop clothes, minimize dust, ect...
