Chemical Equations • Parts of a chemical equation: • Reactants: a substance present at the beginning of a chemical reaction. (Left side) • Products: a substance that is produced during a chemical reaction (Right Side) • Coefficient: a number written before a chemical formula to show how many atoms/molecules of a substance are involved in the reaction • Arrow: “produces”
Chemical Equations Reactant +Reactant Product The number of each element must be the same on each side! (balanced)
Chemical Equations • Label the parts of the following chemical equation: 4Fe + 3O2 2Fe2O3
Balancing Equations • To determine if an equation is balanced: • Make sure the reactants and products contain the same elements. • Count the number of atoms of each element in the reactants. Remember to multiply the coefficient by the subscript, if there is one. • Count the number of atoms of each element in the products. • Check that these numbers are equal. If they are, the equation is balanced.
Balance Equations Example 4Fe + 3O2 2Fe2O3 Products Reactants
Balance Equations Example Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + ? Products Reactants
Closed Container Reactions • In a closed container, the mass of any gas is trapped.
Check-point with Partners With use of your coach book partner read (every other paragraph) and summarize. • Types of evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred. (should be 4 different ways) (pg. 29) • What are the physical properties used to indicate an unknown substance. And what does each mean? (pg. 27- 28) • What do filters, sifters, and evaporation have in common? (pg. 24) • What is the law of conservation of mass in your own words? (pg.34)
Open Container Reactions • In an open container, if a gas is produced, the mass of the product will be less than the mass of the reactants. • Mass escapes from the open container and releases into the air.
Crystals • Crystals are solid molecules that are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern.
