2. Why in Brazil? • In the last half century or so, Brazilian and Latin American Mathematics has been developing rapidly and acquiring increasing international recognition. Latin American contribution to World mathematical production (%)

3. Why in Brazil? • Brazil joined the IMU in 1954 (in Group I) and was promoted to Group IV in 2005. • National mathematical community up from some fifty people in the 1950’s to around one thousand active researchers today. • A new wave of growth of Mathematics must now take place, to meet the needs of a country of continental proportions.

4. Why in Brazil? • The current political and economic situation is particularly favorable, as Brazilian economy becomes increasingly solid. • Brazilian authorities are strongly supportive of the initiative to bring the ICM2014 to Brazil. I want to express the full support of the Brazilian government to the initiative to host the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Rio de Janeiro […] I assure you of full backing from the Brazilian authorities. 5. Brazil and Latin America • Strong mathematical interaction between Brazil and other countries in the region, in particular through UMALCA - Mathematical Union for Latin America and the Caribbean. • Funding for scientific collaboration in the region, including research networks, exchange of researchers, joint meetings, through the PROSUL program of the Brazilian government. • Overwhelming support to the ICM Rio de Janeiro 2014 from colleagues and institutions across Latin America.

6. Brazil and Latin America Active collaboration between mathematicians of the Latin American area and Brazilian scientists and institutions is an important ingredient in the steady development of mathematics in several of the countries in the region. José Antonio de la Peña, President of UMALCA Brazil, moreover, has been a center that catalyses relations between other countries in Latin America. Many Mexican-Uruguayan and Mexican-Peruvian relations cannot be understood without the central role of Brazil. Latin America has 10 member countries of the IMU and never hosted an ICM.

15. General Assembly We invite the 2014 IMU General Assembly to the Green Coast, one of the most beautiful stretches of Brazilian coastline. Just south of Rio de Janeiro and running for some 270 Km, the Green Coast displays a unique mixture of jungle covered mountains, untouched tropical forest, limpid lagoons, waterfalls and beaches, and over 300 pristine ocean islands.
