An Experience with Augmenting a Mirror as a Personal Ambient Display Kaori Fujinami Department of Computer, Information and Communication Sciences, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Fahim Kawsar Department of Computer Science, Waseda University Asia Pacific Conference on Computer Human Interaction (APCHI) 2008
Outline • Introduction • AwareMirror System • Evaluation • Concluding Remarks
Introduction • Due to the advancement of technologies computational devices and a heavy amount of information. • A mirror has been utilized since ancient days. It reflects physical objects appearing in front of it.
AwareMirror System • Overview • Two Modes of Information Rendering • Prototype Implementation
Overview • Mirror displays information relevant to a person in front of it on the periphery of his/her sights. • 3 types of low-level information • infra-red range • Personal (unshareable) information • personal artefact • 3 types of information to display • Weather • state of a public transportation • next appointment
Two Modes of Information Rendering • listed information is useful but might disturb a user's primary task. • image-based • text-based
Evaluation • Methodology • Results and Discussions
Methodology • A Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) method. • Fourteen subjects (12 students and 2 company employees) • One family (parents and an adult daughter) and a company employee living alone.
Results and Discussions • Activation of Abstract Information Mode • half of the subjects (7 people) • Transition to Detailed Information Mode • 68.8% of the subjects (11 persons) • Detailed Information Rendering • 68.8% of the subjects • Two Phase Information Presentation • 66.7% of the subjects (10 persons)
Concluding Remarks • Shows that the majority of the subjects preferred • the two-phase information provision. • the automatic activation and the manual transition. • User likes an ordinary mirror at the beginning, but once has interests in the information, it should be useful as an information display.
