Test Taking Strategies By: Jessica Wheatley and Katie Ward
Before the Test • Start preparing for exams the first day of class. Read the syllabus ahead of time to find out when your exams will be and how much they count toward your grade. • Plan reviews as a part of your regular weekly schedule. • Review for several short periods rather than one long period. • Turn main points of each topic or heading into a question. Check to see if the answers come out correctly when you are done reading. • Also, use flashcards.
Stay up to date on assignments. • Make sure you understand the information as you are learning it. If you do not, ask your instructor for help. • Get a good night’s sleep before a test. • When studying break sessions up so you are not cramming.
After the Test • If the Instructor reviews the exam in class, make sure you attend. • Students tend to skip class the day of review because there is “nothing happening.” • It is a way for you to review the information you have already studied for, and place it into long- term memory.
During the Test • Read directions carefully. Many points have been lost because students did not read them. • Remember to preview the test to see how much time is allotted. • Work on the easiest parts first, or the ones that you know the most. • Find out if you are penalized for incorrect responses. • When answering essay questions, try to make an outline to help you begin writing. • Organization, clear thinking, and good writing are important. • Neatness. Make sure your writing is legible. • Save time at the end of your exams to go back and review questions you have skipped or missed.
