What should I bear in mind? • Look at the intermediate future: ages 14-19 • Take into account your strengths – namely how you learn best • Consider the qualifications you will need • Take into account employment opportunities both locally and nationally • Consider if you have a preference for a particular career • Match the subjects you choose with the above factors
14-19 CurriculumConsider the next five years The 14-19 Curriculum aims to: • Meet the needs and aspirations of all young people right across the ability range. • Raise the attainment of all pupils • Make sure you develop a wide range of skills so that your employment opportunities are improved.
14-19 CurriculumWhat will I study? From September 2004 there will be a small core of compulsory subjects: • English, Maths, Science & ICT. • Also at St. Peter’s you will take RE & Modern Foreign Languages • You will have the opportunity to take subjects from the following areas: Design Technology, the Arts and Humanities. • Your timetable will be a combination of Academic Subjects, Vocational Courses and Work Related Experience.
Take into account Employment Patterns Some Facts: • Employability: 80% of new jobs in the future will be at level 3 + • However, at present the UK falls behind France and Germany in the proportion of the workforce holding level 2 and level 3 qualifications • The workforce of the future are likely to change career paths several times throughout their working life.
The skills you will need In our local area employers are telling us what skills people will need to obtain jobs in the future. You will need the following generic skills: • Adaptability: You will need to be able to take on new jobs • Customer Care Skills • Ability to work in a Team • Enthusiasm, initiative, reliability. • Literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.
What Careers Help do we provide? • Hilary Light from Connexions Service. • All Year 9 pupils have had careers input. • There is an opportunity for them to book individual interviews. • Hilary will also be available on the Review/Target setting day to see parents.
How do I choose my subjects? • Keep your options open, you will specialise more when you get to college. • Think about where you want to be in 5 or 6 years time. • Education after you leave St. Peter’s can also be a mix of academic, vocational and work-related.
Deciding your Pathway This will be determined by: Data + Aptitude + Type of Learner + (Career)
How do I learn best?Types of Learner • Visual • Auditory • Tactile
Visual Prefer to learn by: • Seeing a mental picture of something • Writing things down and visualising it. • Do well in the classroom and can focus on the teacher for long periods of time.
Auditory Prefer to learn by: • Listening through conversation or language. • Talking things through , reading out loud. • Do well in the classroom
Tactile (Kinaesthetic) Prefer to learn by: • Actually doing/touching, have a hands on approach. • Like putting theory into practise. • Do better in practical based subjects.
St. Peter’s will provide three routes The school will guide pupils along 1 of 3 possible pathways: • Primarily Academic + Some Vocational • An even mix of academic and vocational • Some academic but Primarily Vocational & Work Related Experience
Next Meeting: 28th January 2004Review &Target Setting Day Instead of Year 9 Parent Evening we are holding a review and target setting day on 28th January 2004. On this day: • Year 9 pupils will not be in school during the day • The pupil and parents/guardians will have a 15-20 minute meeting with Form Tutor, Head of Year or member of the Senior Management Team • These meetings will be scheduled throughout the school day and early evening • Hilary Light from Connexions Service will also be in attendance
Next Meeting: 28th January 2004Review &Target Setting Day On this day the following information will be shared with you: • KS2 and CAT data. • KS3 predictions. • Feedback from subject teachers on progress. • Type of learner. • Suggested Pathway
Aim of the interview • Discuss progress. • Decide on the best pathway. • Consider possible option choices. • Set clear targets to help your son/daughter progress. • Consider their future after St Peter’s.
