Illustrations • When creating illustrations, think about the same things as you would for written content. • What do you want to achieve? • Add value to the conversation.
Speak With Your Customers • Social Media • Feedback pages • See what is going on with your competitors • What tactics are they using, and are those tactics effective?
Using Illustrations to Represent • Show exact items (retail sites) • Clarify where something is. (security code) • Using effective illustrations can make steps in a process memorable. • Keep it simple!
Emotion • Get people to see themselves in the images. • Retail sites, college sites (MNSU) • What message are you trying to convey? • Are you trustworthy? Cool? Will people fit in there? • Remember, pictures are very interpretive. • You will have to rely on your audience to think of the message instead of just stating it.
Seven Guidelines for using illustrations effectively • 1)Don’t make people wonder what or why • If your site visitors have to stop to figure out what you are showing or why your are showing it, the illustration has lost its value • Try not to make pictures to distracting • If you have to spend too much time figuring out what the image represents, then the value is lost
(2)Choose an appropriate size • Like the bears’ beds in the Goldilocks story, illustrations may not work if they are too small or too large • Don’t let large pictures push content down too far • Make sure small pictures are clear (3)Show Diversity • Pictures of people make web sites vivid, attractive, and conversational • To represent your site visitors, think broadly • Show your internal diversity, but be truthful • Show the photos in context, show the whole web page with the rest of the page’s web content. • Context matters
(4)Don’t make content look like ads • Many people expect colorful small boxes to be ads, especially on the right side of a web page • Don’t put content from your site — or links to that content — into ad-like boxes • Visitors are likely to ignore these boxes (5)Don’t annoy people with blinking rolling, waving, or wandering text or pictures • Movement is eye-catching • On the screen, movement is annoying • Takes our eyes from the task we are trying to do
(6) Use animation only where it helps • The only good reason to animate graphics is if it helps explain the content • Animation can be very useful to walk someone through a process • Oday, video is the most common technique for animation (7) Make illustrations accessible • For people who use screen-readers, must annotate illustrations so the assistive software can describe them • Make ALT-text meaningful • To write good ALT-text, you must know why you are using the illustration
Ben McCorkle: GlossaTechnologia: Anatomy of a Wiki-Based Annotated Bibliography • GlossaTechnologia is a work in progress for creating an open source wiki focusing on creating a usable research tool. • Goal is to be maintained, edited, and created by scholars and professionals • Second goal is to create interactivity between collaborators, strengthens the sense of community in the field.
Reason for the wiki GlossaTechnologia • “assemblage of a collaborative knowledge base.”(217) Wikis in themselves promote collaboration through knowledge. • Annotated bibliographies are already online, but they are just counterparts of their print version. GlossaTechnologia creates conversation and multiple perspectives. The new medium creates something new.
Decisions Made • GlossaTechnologia needed a wiki platform to choose. Which features are important? What wiki platform works for the structure and design? Will the wiki serve GlossaTechnologia in the future? • How will the wiki confront site vandalism? Restrict the site or not to restrict the site? • Addressing GlossaTechnologia as a completely open sourced wiki. In the future does it need to be restricted in anyway.
The Future • Locking pages from unauthorized edits to decrease spammer vandalism. • Creating a cleaner interface. Making wiki easier to use, create, and edit content. • Create a site that people want to continue to use and build upon.
Wiki Writing GlossaTechnologia: Anatomy of a Wiki-Based Annotated Bibliography By Ben McCorkle He’s and Augusta State University grad!
WikiWhy • A resource wiki • GlossaTechnologia seems to have disappeared from the internet – sad • Goal: extend its overall reach and utility by being updatable, dynamic, and dialogical, benefitting from multiple perspectives
Challenges • Choosing a platform • Building and sustaining a community • Artificial social networking
What? • Annotated bibliographies suffer from a short shelf life • Electronic media means easier updating – fresher material • The catch – it still has to be updated
