The purpose & structure of the communiction Structural Presentation Devices When analysing any work (including your own!), you need to think about . . . Use of Language Comparative features of similar communications (two or more) Overall effectiveness
A purpose for a document, may influence its presentation Look at the extract from a RNLI Beach Booklet • What is the purpose of this information? • In what different ways does it try to achieve it’s purpose? • What effect would the writer want it to have on it’s readers? • What different audiences might this booklet be aimed at? • Do you think the presentation of this information is effective?
In pairs look at both the Lodge Inns & Granary Wharf Leaflets • Write a brief paragraph about each which comments on its effectiveness, mentioning aspects of structure & presentation such as : • Use of headings • Fonts and sizes of typeface • Use of colour • Use of photographs • Overall layout • Different types of information eg use of maps/charts/logos • Use of borders • Audience
Remember there a 4 main writing styles • Writing to : • Explore, imagine, entertain (usually fiction) • Inform, explain, describe • Argue, persuade, advise/instruct • Analyse, review, comment
Formal or Informal? • A FORMAL language style is when words and sentences are written in full, there are few colloquial (casual) words, popular expressions or impersonal tenses • An INFORMAL language style is when well known, popular phrases (eg ‘under their belts’, ‘’nuff said’); colloquial words (eg buddy, put-down); and contractions (eg are’nt, don’t) are used • The TONE of language is where a writer puts feelings into the words, eg serious, light hearted, enthusiastic, factual
Revision of Presentation techniques v Language styles • Open the file Matching.doc, and sort correctly the items given into the presentation & language columns
Focusing in on the use of Language Task 1 - reminder game Open the Language file, and remind yourself of some language terms by matching the examples in the table! Task 2 • Consider all of the documents we have looked at and consider whether they could be said to be written in a FORMAL or INFORMAL writing style. • What is the TONE of each document?

Facts v Opinion Look again at the Granary Wharf Leaflet • On a sheet of paper, head 2 columns ‘Facts’ and ‘Opinions’, and copy all the information from the Granary Wharf leaflet into the appropriate column • How do you think the writer hopes readers will react to this leaflet? • How does the writer convey this information to achieve this reaction?
Comparisons Look closely at the two Magazine covers • Write down: • What the covers have in common • What makes them different • What the cover of each magazine suggests about its contents • What the intended audience is for each magazine • Give a many details and as much evidence for your answers as you can. Write paragraphs of 60-80 words for a) and b), and about 100-120 words in answer to questions c) and d)
