Components of a Leadership Campaign • CEO appoints a Leadership Campaign Manager (LCM) • LCM works with internal United Way committee to strategize • Separate meeting for company leaders is held • Clear, specific leadership ask is made for gift of $1,200 or more
“Best Practices” • Specific internal Leadership Giving campaign goal • Special recognition of leadership donors • Special event for leadership donors and prospects • Leadership speaker to speak at leadership campaign • Senior level management involved • CEO = leadership donor
Leadership Campaign Event template • Welcome LCM • Comments/Endorsement CEO • Campaign video • Speaker/Testimonial Employee and/or Leadership Speaker • Solicit contributions LCM/Leadership Speaker • Closing LCM
Other “secrets”: • Provide FOOD • Share the Leadership Book…maybe a sense of competition??? • Provide a compelling story • Collect pledge forms as people leave leadership event • Follow-up • SAY THANK YOU!
Pitfalls to avoid • Forgetting to make a specific ask for $1,200 or more • Not having CEO involved • Not handing out pledge forms during meeting and collecting as people leave • Not inviting the right people
Some examples of great leadership campaigns: • UMB – YLS leadership event at Boulevard Brewery with special presentation from CEO • GE Energy – Leadership breakfast event at UW agency • Husch & Eppenberger – Happy Hour for all young attorneys and provided a challenge match for new leadership donors.
