P-SPAFS is a regional plan developed by Pacific Island administrations, in collaboration with SPC and FAO, to improve agricultural and fisheries statistics. It aims to develop indicators, integrate fisheries statistics into national systems, enhance use in policy formation, and strengthen capacity in data collection and analysis.

Glossary P-SPAFS: Pacific – Strategic Plan for Agricultural and Fisheries Statistics “Agriculture” = crops, livestock, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries Created by Pacific Island agricultural, fisheries and planning administrations for the Pacific; in collaboration with SPC and FAO. Acknowledging the Global Strategy to improve agricultural and fisheries statistics and the European Union (EU) supported Intra ACP Pacific Agricultural Policy Project
What is P-SPAFS? Distribution of the value of household consumption expenditure on fish and seafood, by source (HIES)
What are the objectives of P-SPAFS? Develop a core set of regional indicators Integrate fisheries statistics into national statistical systems Improved use of statistics in policy formation Increased capacity to collect, compile, process, interpret, analyse and disseminate fisheries statistics
How did P-SPAFS come about? Rural households in Solomon Islands (HIES, 2012)

What’s next? Heads of Fisheries are invited to discuss and seek clarification on P-SPAFS Endorsement is sought from Heads of Fisheries on the current P-SPAFS draft The draft will be taken to other authoritative bodies, such as HoA, HoPS and PSSC, and will be presented at the Pacific Week of Agriculture for final endorsement on October 2017
