  2. There are several ways in which ordinary trade union members can participate (take part) in the work of their union.

  3. 1. Paying Fees The simplest and most basic way that an ordinary member can participate in a trade union is by paying membership fees on a regular basis. Without these fees the union would not be able to operate.

  4. 2. Attending meetings Unions are only strong if their members attend meetings and get involved in decision making. Ordinary trade union members can attend meetings in their workplace, which are organised by the shop steward. These meetings often take place during lunch breaks or at the end of the working day.

  5. 3. Electing Officials Union members have the chance to vote for their union officials. For example, members can vote for a shop steward to represent the workplace and a General Secretary to be in overall charge of the union. It is important to vote in union elections so that the best person can be elected for these important jobs.

  6. 4. Standing for election Those union members who are keen to become involved in the work of their union can stand as candidates themselves. For example, they could become the shop steward or the health and safety representative in their workplace.

  7. 5. Supporting decisions Members can participate in their union by supporting any decisions made by the union. For example, when a trade union calls for industrial action, it is important for as many members as possible to follow instructions for it to be effective. Many union members believe that after a ballot all members should follow the decision – even if they personally disagree with it.

  8. Exam Question • Explain, in detail, the ways that ordinary members can participate in trade unions. 8 marks Use notes and homework research to help you with examples.
