  1. SURVIVAL GUIDE GRISSOM MIDDLE SCHOOL GRIZZLIES

  2. WELCOME TO GRISSOM Middle school is a “transition” period, full of changes and adjustments. This “Survival Guide” was created to answer some of the questions often asked by incoming students. If you still have questions, be sure to ask any Grissom staff member – they’re here to help you! Have a great school year! SOME KEY INFORMATION: Principal: Mrs. Maryann Figurski (586) 698-4310 Assistant Principal: Mr. David Murphy (586) 698-4311 Counselor A – K: Mrs. Denise Landers (586) 698-4316 Counselor L – Z: Ms. Ronna Fisher (586) 698-4315 35701 Ryan, Sterling Heights, Michigan 48310 www.wcskids.net/Grissom MAIN OFFICE HOURS: 7 A.M. – 4 P.M. If you have attendance questions or you get to school late, you must report to the Main Office. Keep this phone number handy. Attendance Reporting: 586-698-4543

  3. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF … • I FORGET MY LOCKER COMBINATION ... Get a pass from your teacher and then go to the Main Office or Counseling Center. • I FEEL ILL AND WANT TO GO HOME ... Get a pass from your teacher and then go to the Counseling Center. • I WILL BE AWAY FOR A FEW DAYS WITH MY FAMILY ... Bring a note from a parent/guardian to the Main Office to get the necessary papers for a pre-arranged absence. • I WANT TO SEE MY COUNSELOR ... Get a pass from your teacher and then go to the Counseling Center to sign up for an appointment. • I AM ABSENT AND WANT TO GET MY HOMEWORK ... Teachers have different procedures. Check with your teacher. Remember to see HW and Teacher Info on Grissom’s website.

  4. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF … • I NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL FOR AN APPOINTMENT ... Bring a note from a parent/guardian to the Main Office as soon as you arrive at school in the morning. • I FORGET MY BUS NUMBER ... Ask in the Counseling Center. • I AM LATE TO SCHOOL IN THE MORNING ... After 8:00 a.m., you should report to the Main Office. • I LOSE MY SCHEDULE AND FORGET WHERE MY CLASSES ARE ... Request another copy of your schedule in the Counseling Center. • I FORGET MY LUNCH ... Get a pass from your teacher and then go to the Main Office.

  5. HELPFUL HINTS • Backpacks make it easier to carry your books, lunch, and whatever else you need to and from school. Backpacks are kept in your locker during the day. Backpacks with wheels will not fit in your locker. • Don’t put off your homework until the last minute. You’ll regret it when you are up late (if your parents will allow it!) finishing the report you’ve known about for two weeks. • Get the phone number of at least two people from each of your classes. This way you have someone to call if you are absent or need help on an assignment. • Use different colored notebooks and folders for each class. You only have a few minutes between classes – the different colors make grabbing your books and getting to class on time much easier. Keeping your locker clean and organized helps, too! • Be sure to take good notes in every class. Teachers often use their lecture as part of the test material.

  6. HELPFUL HINTS • We recommend purchasing an agenda. Use it to keep a record of the class assignments, due dates, and school activities. • Access Power School regularly to see your grades. Parents and students can see up-to-the-minute grades. See Grissom’s website for directions. • There is a monthly newsletter. It is available on Grissom’s website. It includes such information as sports schedules, school activities, and the school lunch menu. • If your parents change a home or work phone number, notify the Counseling Center with the change. The school needs up-to-date information. • If you move, be sure to call the Counseling Office. (586-698-4314) • Our parent group, the Grissom Booster Club, meets the first Thursday of each month.

  7. SURVIVAL TIPS There are bathrooms by the Band Room, the Counseling Center, and in the middle of the Eighth Grade Hall. Get your school supplies, including pencils, paper, and agenda together the night before. You’ll want to be prepared when teachers start assigning homework – yes, that might be the first day of school! You have four minutes between classes. You must wear your school ID with the lanyard. They cost $5.00 to replace! The clinic is located between the Counseling Center and the Main Office. If you need to go to the Clinic, ask your teacher and then come to the Counseling Center.
