CIRCLES Properties and Characteristics of
Definition A circle is the locus of all points equidistant from a central point. http://math2.org/math/geometry/circles.htm
Definitions Related to Circles • Circumference: the distance around the circle. • Diameter: the longest distance from one end of the circle to the other. • Radius: a distance from the center of a circle to any point on it.
Def. continued • Chord: line segment within a circle that touches 2 points on the circle. • Arc: a curved line that is part of the circumference of a circle. • Pi: a number, 3.141592…,equal to the circumference/ the diameter of any circle. • Origin: center of the circle • Sector: a circle wedge (similar to a slice of pie). • Tangent of a circle: a line perpendicular to the radius that touches only one point on the circle.
Formulas Associated with Circles • Hints (r=radius, d=diameter, C=circumference, j & k= center of circle) • d=2r • C=2(Pi)r • Area=(Pi)r² • Equation of a circle=(x-j)² + (y-k)² =r² http://math2.org/math/geometry/circles.htm
Putting the Information Together A • r is the radius • A is a tangent line • B is both a chord and the diameter • C is the arc, and inside the arc is a sector. C r=4 B
